    Ideas for fall planting thicket/shrubs?

I've dotted my field with a handful of these as I see it as the best combination of pheasant and deer habitat for my area (old pasture with some shrubbery for winter cover options). I've found spring planting to always work best for me. I plant as soon as I can get a shovel in the ground. It's...

    Low area bushes recommendations

Crabberry? Crabapple or Cranberry? I personally like dogwoods and ninebark for lower areas where you want shrubbery without height such that you'll have to worry about hawks and owls perching in it.

following year sorghum - how to handle

I like to brush hog and then disk on the same day. I then let it sit for a while before working the soil one last time to plant.

    Buckwheat - any good

I've planted it a number of times here in MI. For me it grows great. The only downsides are that it can't handle frost, so you need to beware to not plant it too early, and it doesn't stand up to any winter weather. Otherwise it grows easily, produces lots of seed, and all kinds of birds love...

    Pheasant Country Antique Sign

I have no idea, but that is a really cool sign! :10sign:

    Planting Forbs into Existing Grasses

What kinds of weeds are you concerned about? I don't have any experience when it comes to habitat out west in true pheasant country, but where I live I'd be inclined to run a disk through a grass stand to set back grasses and encourage forbs, which are commonly also called "weeds" by most...

    Corn food plots and cover

Definitely do. We always like pictures. Moisture will probably be better here in MI than you'd expect out west. You guys have me leaning more and more to trying to get a short maturity grain sorghum raked in. I'd thought about that, but was worried about being able to spray the corn...

    Corn food plots and cover

Thanks. I do have sorghum left - might just have to get the rake out! I only used gly, no residual. Anything I put down should be able to grow unhampered.

    Corn food plots and cover

I'd probably focus anything I broadcast into it at the thinner areas of the plot so there will be some sunlight. The corn is mainly for the birds, but unavoidably also the deer. The second flush of weeds was lots of good stuff - foxtail, milkweed, lambsquarter, and ragweed. It's growing...

    Corn food plots and cover

I planted corn this year for the first time and sprayed it twice. The corn is growing great, but I'm starting to think that perhaps I shouldn't have sprayed the second time. Under the canopy is largely bare now. I could have kept it "weedy corn" instead, offering more cover/seeds/bugs/etc and...

    Spec out a tractor

Sounds like you've got a good start on what you want. Since it's not obvious if you're aiming to buy new or used, make sure you get power steering. Not sure if you'd have a use for rear hydraulic remotes, but something to consider since it's easier to buy a tractor with them already installed...

    Game cover part 2

I have seen pheasants in the states do that in limited amounts, in the west, but not as far west as you. I presume that there are no owls that would prey on the pheasants? What about hawks?
