I've never seen a dog that was a bad retriever of any breed. I've seen them in various stages of training though, and some bad habits such as playing keep away or "tenderizing" the bird.
I get a little frustrated with people trying to manage my dog. If it is one of the guys that doesn't have a dog is where I get annoyed. The worst one was last weekend, Maddie went on point and another guy got to her first, he half assedly kicked around in front of her then released her from...
Like others, I make a good faith effort but with a SA finding the hull is the exception, especially in good years like this year where the cover is so thick.
Not trusting the dog. I'm a slow learner, it took a while for it to sink in that the dog has a MUCH better idea where the birds are than I do. And.. if the dog is on a staunch point there is a bird there somewhere, does not matter if I just walked through that very spot 2 minutes ago.

I hunted my GWP starting at 16 weeks. Well, by hunted I mean she was gun conditioned and had the obedience basics down. She followed the adult dogs around and honored their points, then got to check out the birds they retrieved. Worked out great. If she wasn't a natural backer it wouldn't...
I got my GWP from www.montanagundogs.com up in Kalispell, MT. That's ~9 hours from Williston so a really long day!
I was up there several times looking at puppies and the parents before deciding. Watched the parents work a field and point a bird.
nightmare project at work... all done now.
Hunted Friday, Saturday, and Sunday by Conrad. Shot a lot of pheasants. Ran into a few sharpies and huns but they didn't work out.
Stuck the camera vest on the dog Friday and got some great video!

Finally managed to get out pheasant hunting and had a long weekend of it. Friday I had Maddie wear her camera harness and she got some great video! Feel free to turn the sound off, it adds nothing.

She was a little sticky on retrieves, but we'll work on that.
That's something we are really careful of in groups (party hunting). Most people's dogs only retrieve to them, they don't know or care who actually shot the bird. We're not trying to party hunt, but it kind of works that way on a temporary basis until birds get to the proper owners.
I try to...
