How cold is too cold for a GSP chasing pheasant?

Thanks for the input guys. Being a native Michigander now in Colorado, I find my cold tolerance can sometimes be above my dogs. I also just started using tuf-foot on a recommendation to toughen Dixie's paws up. That being said, about half the fields out here have cacti or sand burrs that really...

How cold is too cold for a GSP chasing pheasant?

HA! (sorry, poor dog). That is not the first time I have heard a low count from frigid temps. I have only had females, my folks run males but do not breed so it was never an issue.

How cold is too cold for a GSP chasing pheasant?

That is close to where I am at. As long as I keep my drives short enough and we can prevent getting her chilled to the bone and have a place to keep warm, I will still work Dixie. Thanks for the replies guys

    dog vest

I hunt with a chest protector for upland on my GSP and a neoprene vest for waterfowl in the cold. The neoprene had to be completely altered as they fit labs well not GSP's. I cut a triangle out of the waist area and glued it back together with neoprene diving glue. Works great but she doesn't...

How cold is too cold for a GSP chasing pheasant?

I have owned GSP's for a very long time. I have hunted both waterfowl and upland in freezing weather with my current GSP and she does great. We take extra care when water retrieving in the cold and make sure she can get warm again. However, I was curious if anyone had thoughts about the coldest...

    Our Last Hunt?

Thanks for sharing your story. My pup is 4 years old and I take her every chance I get. I know one day her body will get old even though the GSP in her will make her push on. The day when I am no longer able to hunt her will come and I want to make sure I've given her every opportunity to do...

Last Full Weekend of the season

Went out and hunted Sat evening and Sunday morning. We put up (and then knocked down) one rooster on Saturday. We also put up 6 hens on Sunday morning. 500 total miles, 1 rooster and one tuckered out pup. It was a great success in my book!

    Windy day strategies??

Hi All, As I mentioned in another thread, I will be hunting this weekend in Holyoke Sat & Sun. Sunday is supposed to be windier than all hell. I usually avoid those days but will be hunting regardless due to season's end closing in on us. I have hunted some windy days but I was curious if...

    Reflections on this Season

Ditto here. I'm an optimist by nature and sometimes to a fault but I sincerely appreciate the a positive reflection of the year. I don't hunt to kill, I hunt to hunt. To watch a home-trained dog do what the pros do, to be with family and friends, and to get away from city. Birds or not, I enjoy...

Last Full Weekend of the season

A buddy and I are heading out with the dog to the Holyoke area (pretty much hunting anywhere on that eastern side) and are staying the night this weekend for the last full weekend of the season. I realize conditions have not been ideal and will not be ideal this weekend but if anyone wants to...
