    Goldendoodle

goldendoodle We bought a goldendoodle as a pet 8 years ago. I trained her to hunt. She hunts pheasants, ducks and grouse. Great nose, stays in range, natural retriever, handles cold water. She has as much stamina and drive as other goldens and labs I have hunted with. Busts brush and...

    Public land stocking

In December, stocked birds are harder to find. Most of the areas have been hunted pretty hard. To find birds, you need to put on some miles walking. The further from the parking areas the better.

It was the best of times and it was the worst of times.

I lost my garmin handheld on public land in Waukesha County last year and thought it was gone. About a month later another hunter found it, called Garmin and they traced it back to me via the registered serial number. He mailed it back. I sent him a thank you and a Cabelas gift card. Still...

    Pheasant preserve recommendation

You can hunt a bunch public areas where the DNR releases pheasants near where you live. Here is a link to the grounds where pheasants are released. My recommendation would be to walk a ways from the parking areas there are plenty of birds to be had. Weekdays are better than weekends. You need...

    Opener

No formal plan. Just mainly experience. We hunted grouse this fall and he improved on the running birds and slowing down and hunting smarter. He's slowly figuring out how to relocate on a running bird.

    Opener

Planning on doing some duck hunting Saturday. Will try to get out at daybreak on Sunday to beat the crowds then again maybe Tuesday morning. My goal this year is to get my 2 year old english setter to handle running birds better.

    ND Hunter safety

I'm a little confused by the ND hunter safety requirement for non residents. Do I need to complete their course to hunt pheasant? It appears I do as I was born after 1961. As a Wisconsin resident born before 1973 Im not required to have taken hunter safety in WI.

    Training Question - chasing

My English Setter is 1.5 years old and we just completed our first hunting season on grouse, woodcock and released pheasants. We had a blast but I have a have a few questions. When the birds hold and are hidden his points are great and he doesn't move until I walk up and flush. If he sees the...

who's going to pheasant fest in milwaukee

Event drew 21,063 which seems to be the norm. I went Saturday. The hunters didn't know what to make of the anime characters. They probably didn't know what to make of us wearing blaze orange and camo caps around downtown milwaukee. I enjoyed the seminars on dog training, cooking and gun...

    What now?

I'll hit some preserves until April. I like Dark Acres near Fort Atkinson. Friendly folks and good cover. I'd like to grouse hunt 1 or two more times. I applied in for a turkey permit in zone 5. I've seen a bunch on our land near Rhinelander. I've never turkey hunted before. Does anyone...

a high of 16 sounds like a good day to be out.

I've been finding birds in that cane type stuff as well. I was told it's some sort of an invasive plant. It's nasty to walk through but the dogs don't seem to mind. They get in it and it sounds like breaking glass. Hard to shoot in it as well unless you're on the edge. I can't figure out a...

    Wis birds and pointing dogs

pointers I'm dealing with the same thing. My 1 year old english setter has flushed a bunch of running birds this year out of range. I'm hoping with experience he figures out how to handle them. He did well on grouse and woodcock but the released roosters are running on him and he hasn't...

    Advice for a novice?

public land I like to do the opposite of what the regular hunter does. He likes to hunt the big fields near parking spots on weekend late mornings and afternoons. Look for smaller areas far away from the parking spots. Hike into the public land a mile or two and then start your hunt. Go...
