Our group hunted NW KS. We ended our weekend with 45 roosters and 3quail. Saw a bunch of hens. Overall much better than expected. Cover was better than average. Mostly young birds. With the good cover and number of hens, fingers crossed, good hope for next year. Hunted a lot of wheat...

Any thoughts on where harvest will be by the opener. Looking at the USDA progress page it appears as though things are way behind normal.

Yes it is. Just reopened a few years ago. I would think huntin weekend would be a big $$$$ maker for them.

Toad....that is cool. You don't hear much about the falconry season. We have one here in PA but don't see it or hear of successes. Wishing you great success this season. Please keep us posted.

My sources tell me that the past few years there has been a good hatch in the NW at harvest. They died due to extreme heat. The tell tale is how they survive over the next two months with heat, food and moisture. Keeps fingers crossed.

Being from out of state and just uneducated. How does this affect the birds. Even though there is disease does the plant grow offering cover for nesting? My mind says as long as there is a good leaf cover it should help nesting. I realize disease affects yield and that is very disappointing...

Greg I did the same. I had both my boys just walk for two year to learn the ropes. In PA they need to be 12 to hunt as well. I figured they should walk for two years, get the hunters safety, then flush 'em and crush 'em. My oldest as well 14yrs old. 5'9" 155 lbs. has been hunting KS since...
