    It's Spring 2023

First flight of Sand Hill Cranes I've seen so far passed over the house heading North today. It'll be a steady stream of flocks soon because we seem to be on a large segment of birds flight path.

    It's fall 2022

It's fall. First small flock of a couple family groups of Sandhill Cranes flew over the house here in Auburn today heading for the valley and the Cosumnes River Preserve. I see it's two days later than last year.

    It's Fall

First flight of Sandhills flew South over our house today which is a regular check point for both directions of their migration.

    It's spring 2021

Constant flight of Sandhill Cranes heading NNE over the house. Sure sign it's spring...as far as they're concerned.

Buying a House for hunting fishing

This is an old post but just saw it. There are only three cities in Montana that meet your requirement of 50k population size. Great Falls...59K, Missoula...71K, Billings...110K. Because of the population your hope to find good hunting within 40 minutes drive is a very long shot. Billings is an...

    It's Spring 2020

A huge flock of Sandhill Cranes went over us here in Auburn heading NE toward Montana. I think the weather has them fooled along with the Almond trees.

And the Winner Is ... By a Huge Landslie ...Yolo

That is a great representation of how the pheasant hunting has gone into the toilet in Calif. on public hunting areas. Still hard to understand why since some private land still produces so many birds. I still think that all the mosquito abatement district's killing all invertebrates is a big...

    Kicking off the season

Looking at the Sage Grouse opportunities in Oregon you, and since there are 4 birds in the photo, your brother, were lucky on two counts. Limited permits require luck in most of the drawings and then luck in finding the birds. Go buy a lottery ticket. Right now...

    California Ammo Background Checks

Everybody needs to learn how to reload. I've reloaded steel in 1 1/4 oz. when lead was first outlawed and it worked OK. The components and recipes have improved enormously since back then and there's no waiting or paying of fees to buy components. They now have #8 steel so there's really nothing...

    It's Fall

It's definitely fall according to the flock of Specks that flew over today. Rarely see or hear Specks up here. Snows sometimes.

    It's Fall

The first flock of Sandhill Cranes went over the house here in Auburn 4 days ago. Temps are dropping and everything is going to happen all at the same time.

    Dove locations

My family raised walnuts in the Napa valley for 50 years before they pulled them out and put in grapes for another 30. Nobody is harder on the natural world than a grape grower and there is nothing more like a desert than a vineyard. I understand that farmers and ranchers need to reduce pest...

    Dove locations

I understand. I neglected to mention that I think you are to be commended for your position of not shooting something you don't want to eat. I feel the same way just I'll eat most birds at least once. In my life I've eaten, Sparrows, Robins, Black Birds, Meadow Larks and probably some more I...

    Dove locations

How come? They're the same basic bird? The ones I've eaten were, except for size, exactly the same as Morning doves. Kind of like, "I only eat Valley Quail but I'd never eat a Mountain Quail." Everybody is of course entitled to their own tastes and prejudices. My friend lived on a wildlife area...
