    dog catches a pheasant

Have a GSP that has caught a hen or three, I flushed one right into his face he never really even took a step. Last year I actually picked up a rooster (wild) off of one of his points completely uninjured, did the same with a hen a few before, both were after a good snow.

What is the best pair of boots you ever owned for hunting pheasants?

LaCrosse Burlys!... Somebody had to say it

    Best Hunting Gloves?

Right! Seems that by the time I really figure out I like some piece of hunting garb and feel like it is lasting like I want I can't find the same ones (gloves, boots, upland pants, etc.). Or like A5 said they will make some change that really degrades the item, for my purposes anyhow.

How do you get your dogs in shape?

That's tough, living in the city and all. Sounds like the bike route may be the best if you absolutely can't get out to some open spaces. Lucky for me I just load the dogs up, dump them out on gravel and watch them run for a few miles most of the time. Lets me be pretty lazy about the process...

    Best Hunting Gloves?

I'm intrigued by those golf gloves, look pretty warm and grip is probably excellent. I'm in the "no one pair is going to work all season" camp. Early til temps get down in the 20s or teens I stick with the deer leathers. I don't have huge hands so I get the biggest womens' pair I can (they seem...

    Camping questions

Well if you haven't already headed out, I just slept on the side of dirt roads/highway pull offs in the truck while out in KS this year, no one every bothered me. From reading around on the regs I gathered that state land is supposed to be posted for the purpose of camping, I definitely saw some...

    Findings Birds?

Only have gotten out once last week in MO so far, hopefully get down there for a couple days in Dec. though. The one time I went out in north central was out for the morning ~2hrs and found one nice sized covey ~15-20 birds in two separate groups spaced out around some uncut beans. Pretty early...

    Headed for Kansas

Should be out there tomorrow. Hopefully that's right on the weather, maybe have some good weather to work the dogs on some quail/move a few ducks. Hope your season is going well, I will try to post up some thoughts on the trip.

    Headed for Kansas

Hopefully we can avoid the early crowds by going waterfowling, then work the uplands more midday. Gotta figure there will be some rifle season shenanigans going on, reminds me of my childhood (grew up in MO). Now, off to Amazon to find a blaze orange body suit...

    Headed for Kansas

Thanks JSMITH, kinda what I was hoping. Didn't know if access would be a problem, have hunted Iowa public during shotgun season and that can get pretty crowded. That is part of the reason I am excited about being out of Iowa during this stretch but, forgot to check on Kansas' firearms season...

    Headed for Kansas

Headed out that way for about 6 days but, just realized that rifle season will be going (doh). I will be chasing some quail and waterfowl on public ground and was wondering if anybody had any opinions on how the deer season will affect such things. Really can't move the dates unfortunately...

    Cedar Rapids Area?

+1 on Highland. About 45 min drive from CR, have been out a couple times walking along and for an event. Birds I saw were released and not dizzied. Cover was very good compared to another place I have been and birds seemed strong (no birds getting caught by dogs/getting caught in heavy cover...

    Belle Plain

Good luck to ya! I have been that way twice for fairly short (2-3 hr) hunts so far and have bagged birds (2 & 1) both times. Certainly not loaded up but, have gotten into birds, some spots have been dry and some have held a few. Hopefully they have the rest of the corn out, most of the roosters...
