FS: 160 Acres of PRIME CRP Land in North-Central Kansas

I guess it depends on what you mean by "anything".....the acerage thats in CRP has to stay in native grasses...that's why its such great habitat for birds and deer. Who know if the CRP program will still be around at the end of this contract. Its part of the US Farm Bill, so it depends on what...

English Pointers on Pheasants - what's been your experience?

I grew up in north central Kansas and we had a couple english pointers when I was a kid. They did great on quail but really struggled with the pheasants. Plus, they were going hunting....if you came along too, that was fine but they weren't gonna wait on you! We then went to GSP's and now are...

FS: 160 Acres of PRIME CRP Land in North-Central Kansas

Hey all, I'm selling a quarter-section of land in Osborne County, Kansas. Its 6 miles South and 5 miles West of the town of Osborne. The piece is almost entirely in CRP (into its 2nd 10 year contract) and is SPECTACULAR cover and holds a LOT of pheasants and quail! It is also exceptional...

    Pheasant population decline theory

Its probably a combination of all of the above plus just cleaner, road-edge farming practices. Fewer shelter belts, hedge rows, plumb thickets, weedy road ditches, etc. We have put in 60-90' weed/grass mix CRP buffers around every production field. We started doing that about 6 years ago and...

    ??? for eveyone

Its actually REQUIRED in some of the CRP programs. They have also allowed people to hay CRP in the last few years because of the drought and the shortage of hay otherwise. Chris

    Pheasant state of emergency?

In about 1986 we had a TERRIBLE blizzard with a deep snow that had a very icy top and it killed a LOT of birds (North Central Kansas). It was not uncommon to come across an entire covey of quail dead in the snow/ice still in their little circle. It took at least 5 years before we started...

    Hunting Turkeys with Dogs?

My dad went on an invited turkey hunt a few years ago in the fall near Topeka and they specifically pushed turkey flocks out of creek bottoms up into CRP and then put down bird dogs to point and flush the birds and then they wing shot them...just like any upland bird hunt. I couldn't believe...

    Speaking of low bird numbers...

2 years ago, I watched a hawk snatch a quail OUT OF THE AIR on a covey rise! It happened SO fast it was unbelievable! We then walked up and found where the hawk had eaten the quail on the ground in the next plumb thicket. No doubt in my mind that the hawks are hard on the quail.....too bad...

    Conservation Officers

Larry Stone was the game warden for Smith County for many years and a very good guy. Always enjoyed interacting with him and he was always fast to respond if ever needed. I'm sorry that he retired. Don't know the new guy yet. Chris

    Browning BSS fans

I LOVE my 20 ga BSS (IC/Mod)! My grandfather bought 3 of them in the late 70's or early 80's. One for himself and one for each of his grandsons (me and my cousin). Its the sweetest shooting gun.....I shoot it better than most of my other shotguns. I should refinish the wood as its gotten...

Dogtra 2000 Train & Beep - Great Collar!

Kind of a funny story....I thought I had lost the controller by it dropping out of my pocket last fall. I checked into getting a replacement controller but it was going to be about $200, so I went and bought a new collar. Was doing some spring cleaning in the garage over the weekend and found...

surprise- hawk flys in fir a kill

Last year, we had a hawk swoop in on a covey rise and snatch a quail right out of the air! We were all just slack jawed! When we got to the plumb thicket that the hawk landed in, we found the feathers from where he ate his treat. Just absolutely amazing! I couldn't believe how fast it all...
