    Residents Only Opener

Pretty ridiculous if that's true, given we're the 49th state in the country for public land. I guess I'm not a huge biker, but have family and friends that are....seems like they have plenty of places they can ride.

    Pointing dead birds

My dog is a pointing lab, but he has pointed crippled snow geese to crippled roosters if buried in grass. If they even twitch he barrels in. I just assumed they gave off a different scent as you've said, there is obviously a difference in the scent of the bird. I used to wonder if there was a...

    Residents Only Opener

I agree with those who say don't restrict. It helps the state economy. I can't imagine the amount of money South Dakota misses out on every year by only allowing X number of out of state waterfowl permits now that the migration has pushed further west. I know I'd be headed there to stay with...

    Opening day

I tried to post a longer story, but I hunted the afternoon on Saturday on public and all 3 of us got 2. I hunted private back home for 1 hour on sunday and dog never got birdy in two small draws. Hopefully the farmers get some corn out this week so my better spots can be hunted.

    Spirit Lake area? any insight?

Saw a lot of birds again today while walking out from duck hunting. Half tempted to hunt here since the dog constantly finds them walkin in and out of some areas, but I'll pass until later. Hopefully there's a few around. I'm sure you'll find birds in any of the areas you hunt. They're fairly...

    Small Game Distribution Map?

Look at the August roadside counts on the DNR page. That would give you an idea.

    Des Moines area pheasants?

You may also could drive around and knock on some doors. I've got permission to a couple private places that hold good numbers.

    Des Moines area pheasants?

He's right there's some public east of town 15 miles, called Chicaqua Bottoms. I'd recommend a dog if you plan to hunt there, very expansive but holds some birds.

    Spirit Lake area? any insight?

Was just there last weekend, pretty good numbers in the areas I was hunting ducks. I'd venture to say that 1/2 those birds will be dead by the end of Saturday and/or Sunday. I'd also like to make it upfor some upland hunting, but I know it's going to be a madhouse come Saturday morning. I'd...

    2012-13 Upland Bird Bucket List

Upland Bucket list: 1. Hunt Prairie Chickens/Sharpies for the first time, hopefully successful on a mountworthy Chicken. 2. Hunt wild quail for the first time, again hopefully successful. 3. Get the dog over more wild birds this year than last. Plan to take a couple trips this fall. A grouse...

    Pointer getting too close

Hey all, new to the sight and thought I'd pose a question I've been thinking about for some time. I've enjoyed searching the sight thus far. I have a 2 year old pointing black lab, he's my 1st ever dog and I've done all the training myself. I hunt a lot of waterfowl and some upland. There...
