    Close Working Pointers

"If you want a dog to range close, don't allow him to go beyond a certain distance; whether on strolls in the park or hunting." I have flushers and nothing can be more true. I've hunted behind a Vizsla and it worked real tight. I enjoyed watching the dog work.

    Spring Photos

Fantastic job on the pics. Particularly liked the roosters going at it with the turkeys in the forefront. You ought to submit them to a mag.

    spaniels and heeling...wow!

chrokeva--As one who is owned by a FBECS I've enjoyed following your pup's journey. I recall many years ago someone saying that you don't train cockers, you negotiate with them. It's not literally true of course but I found with my cocker, my first dog to train, he helped to train me. In the...

    Pheasant Retrieval Help

Let me add to mnaj with the following suggestion. Not sure what distances you are working his retrieves but using smaller birds or frozen chukars, etc, have him fetch at very short distance from you to start, maybe 10 feet, and then gradually let him hold the bird longer when he returns. Lots...

    15 week old lab problems

I have a field bred cocker now 8 and a good phezz hunter and retriever. This was my first dog to train and at around 5 months he wouldn't retrieve or show interest in it. I did notice however that he always wanted to go to the kids' rooms and steal stuff---anything but usually laundry, shoes...

    Guns and Dogs

Zeb--I've read Craig's articles and even got his book as a gift. Can you describe how Piccardy hunting style from your experience. I hunt flushers but I'm thinking of a pointy breed next time. I need the versatility of a good retriever but a pointy dog that hunts close and at a moderate pace...

I have the Super Sport in 20 gauge which I use for hunting and sporting clays. Actually it's a nice dove gun too. You should enjoy it. Good luck with your decision.

    Looking for my first flusher!!

All good breeds but of course pay attention to breeders and breeding. I have a field bred cocker and a Boykin. The Boykin is a serious retriever but if you hunt big water or geese I'd go lab.

    First Bird Dog

It sounds like you're on your way. I own a Boykin and am enthused about the breed especially because he has been very forgiving about my many mistakes while training. The Boykin is non-stop prey driven retrieving machine. Enjoy the ride. I am curious about your reasons for selecting a...

    Finally made the plunge

After visiting this site for a while especially last year just before my first SD phezz hunt, I took a moment to join in the conversation. Started hunting phez in Pa during the late 60s and 70s when Pa had lots of birds. I live in the Va area and lived for many years in the nearby eastern...
