Anyone know a good hunting dog training book?

Honestly, this is some of the best training advice I've seen in some times. My Labs are good bird dogs. Are they trained to the absolute best standard? No. Are they good enough for me? Definitely. They're what you would call "meat dogs". They cover the ground great, checking out every scent and...

    GSP, Lab, I Don't Know

I'll throw in another vote for the pointing Lab. My cousin suggested getting one to me years ago, and I've never looked back. I've had three so far, and currently live with two of them. Personally, I just love the Lab temperment and goofy personality. Here's Diesel, the yellow male, and Dozer...

    Tick control

I used Frontline for years, and had no problems with it. A couple years ago, my vet had me try Nexgard. It's worked just as well, with no issues. I've only had to deal with Lyme's once. A few years ago, I forgot to treat my Lab before we went on a vacation fishing trip to northern Wisconsin...

    Snow birds!

Last Sat. was a good day. Light snow, little bit of breeze. I was out with some friends in Sioux Co., over by Hospers, on some private ground. I lost count of how many birds we saw, and we bagged 7. It was great fun, with lots of birds and good dog work.

    User names

Well, several years ago, when I joined a Lab forum, I had two Labs...Deacon and Diesel. I called them the D brothers. I liked the handle enough that I've used it on several dog and hunting forums. Sadly, Deacon passed two years ago and I just have Diesel. I'm planning on getting another pup...

Your favorite magazine for upland hunting

I get the PF magazine through my membership, and subscribe to Gundog. I actually enjoy reading both of them.

    Why Pointing Labs?

Believe me, I've thought about it. I love the look of a nice Brittany, or a Llewellin Setter. But, I'm kinda hooked on the Labs. So, for now, I kinda have the best of both worlds, I guess. Maybe down the line a few years I'll get a pointer.

    Why Pointing Labs?

Well, I'm certainly no expert, by any means. I've had 2 Labs now, both of them pointing Labs. I've found that when they point, it's not always the classic point, sometimes just a very intense stare at a particular piece of cover. As for why I like them...sometimes the point will give me just...

    Snow totals?

Up in NW Iowa here, in O'Brien Co. We didn't get a thing. All I've got in the yard is old snow, heavily marked by Lab tracks. :p

Organizing Gear and Dogs in Shell

I drive a Ford Expedition. I took out the 3rd row seat, and use the latching points in the floor to hook a ratchet strap on to strap down the dog crate. Add a cooler for any birds I get, a Mud River dog handler's bag with all my Lab's stuff and 1st aid gear, a bag with my ammo and gear, and my...

    Iowa crop report?

NW corner of Iowa here. Farmers are going at it hot and heavy. From what I've seen, most of the beans are out or will be soon. Not much corn out yet in my area, but I'm hoping most of it is out by the start of pheasant season. I haven't seen or heard much for birds this year.

    *Your finest shooting

When I was a youngster, my brother started me out with bunny hunting. One winter, we were hunting along the railroad tracks by the town where he lived. I was up on the embankment while he worked through the brush below me. He flushed one, but didn't have a shot, so I threw down on it and shot...

Largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill at my local lake. Walleye on the Little Sioux River below the low head dams. Walleye, crappie, and muskie up in Wisconsin.
