    Freezer birds

I feel your pain as I live in extreme Eastern Iowa. I am looking forward to my journey to the NW areas however. I hope the weather cooperates, and the roads aren't too bad Saturday. I have not heard the latest weather forecasts.

    Best bang for the buck

Hey all, finally heading to the great west/northwest next week for the first time with myself, father and a friend. I wanted your opinions on where to try for the day. If you had one day to hunt what counties would you target? Coming from extreme eastern Iowa. I have never hunted much west of...

Poll-How far do you drive to find birds?

I guess even though we live in an area that has pheasants , we take it for granted. My point was those fortunate to live in the central to western part of the state, can travel much less to find good bird numbers. Here in eastern Iowa, back in the 80's and 90's we had decent bird numbers, but...

Poll-How far do you drive to find birds?

I'm struggling with that this year. I live in far eastern Iowa, and bird numbers are not great. My dilemma is drive 4-5 hrs to find some good hunting, or drive 20 minutes and shoot the preserve? It's 100 bucks to shoot 5, or food/gas to drive all day to shoot 3. Really tough if I'm by myself...

    Iowa Pheasant Recovery Program

We need it here in the eastern counties. Seems we always get the shaft.

    Late season birds

A couple things I would do. I would alter the way I walk through a field. Approach it at an opposite direction "not the way every other hunter hunts it", and try to go during a weekday. Plus in my neck of the woods, the pheasants are deeper in cover, and try to make as little noise as possible...

    Status report in Iowa

yeah, like I said nothing like the 90's, but they're not extinct. Just may not see many, could be some localized areas that are good.

    Status report in Iowa

It's nowhere near to what it used to be. To get that last row of corn/beans have devastated the habitat. They are not extinct, but in general poor. I'm sure there are isolated areas that may produce, but in general very poor.

    2013 Survey of Pheasant Numbers

It's all in the lack of habitat. I live on the east side of the state, on the Mississippi river, and I have seen farms with nice draws, tiled, and the only thing they're good for is hitting golf balls. Really sad.
