Ever feel guilty for shooting a rooster?

In my Grampa's cabin was a plaque with a hunters prayer Dear Lord, Let me shoot clean and kill clean. If I cannot, please Lord let me miss clean. In that light, there's always been one rooster I've felt.. should not have ended in my bag. My dog pointed him. Yet, I still missed the first two...

Wierdest place you've seen a pheasant.

Here's some pictures. The first is a picture of a few pheasants high in the tree. We live in town, but every once in a while we get a pheasant or two that finds the cattails in the city greenway. This rooster showed up one day so threw some corn out around the tree. He hung around our...

    Good jokes and general fun.

Ok, Here's an oldie that I'll revive. Farmer Bill decided to visit Rancher Bob. Bill got over to the ranch and noticed that Bob was down at the barn. As he headed that way he noticed that Bob had some marks above the barn door and a holding a hand saw. "Bob, what are doing?" "Well," said...

Who's hunting the last 2 weeks of season?

Best wishes for a successful surgery and recovery. I've heard and read great things about the TTA. Wish it would have been available here when Ruby tore her CCL. I opted for the tightrope procedure and ended up having a different vet tighten up the joint with another nylon anchor on the other...

    Dog catches hen. Now what?

I've taken a couple of pointed hens out myself trying to kick'm up. I try to leave them lay, but it's hard to convince Ruby do to the same.

    Time to measure tails.

Anything over 20 inches gets added to my "Pheasant vase" Added a few this year with one just under 23 and one just over 24. I started with anything over 19, but the vase got too full. When it's full again, I'll throw out the 20's. The longest in my collection is 25 1/4

Some Times I get Lucky after being Stupid

Yesterday was a great day to get out to hunt for birds. We started out together, but soon the dogs were working different trails. I ended up two miles away from the Tahoe so I asked the partner to come around with the vehicle to pick me up. Well, I was right on a well traveled SD highway when...

    pointing labs

I took my lab out this weekend with the neigbor and his son. The goal was to give his son an opportunity to get his first rooster, but I had a secondary goal in mind after following this thread. Usually when I hunt Ruby, I tell her to flush the bird when I'm ready. This time I decided to see...

    # of hunters per truck?

In my Tahoe, two hunters and two dogs works great. Can fit another hunter in, but then we have to put our hunting hats on the dash.

    pointing labs

I've found this thread very interesting. One reason because my lab points. And I mean points! Yet, one of the messages that's coming across is because of mixed breeding. How can that be when my lab (and I'm sure others) comes from a long line of AKC registered labs? Interestingly, tomorrow...

    pointing labs

I need to share this story about my pointing lab. Once our group of three saw a rooster fly into a short cedar strip. I went in with Ruby to see if she could find it. Almost to the end, she locked up on the bird. I yelled at my friends that she had found the bird and someone should get at...

    pointing labs

I wasn't expecting Ruby to point, but it came natural to her. When we retrieve in the backyard, I'll either tell her to "Go Get it" or "Find it" Go get it means she's after the dummy and returning it right away. Find it means she slowly walks up to the dummy and points at it until I tell her...

tips for a solo hunter and no dog

I read this years ago, actually tried it a few times and believe it has some benefit. Take a radio along and turn it on. Use this as a blocker and quietly work your way around to the far side. Work the field back to the radio.
