I'll second Jon Hann and also thrown in Blake Wolf of Ringneck Kennels by Concordia and Ethan and Kat Pippitt of Standing Stone Kennels near Pretty Prairie. You can't go wrong with any of them.
And birdshooter's recommendation would be my first recommendation. As far as methods in a book, Training with Mo. When it comes to how I do things, Perfect Start/Perfect Finish is a lot closer and the best DVD series available by far.
Training with Mo by Martha Greenlee. Mo uses West methods of training and is well known for his success. If you are on Facebook, you can also join his group, Steady with Style and get help straight from him and several others that are familiar with his methods.
TK Products LLC out of Michigan makes the best welded wire kennels you will find. They cost a little more, but last a lot longer. I don't know anyone that has them who has been disappointed.
It is what I am suggesting and based on what he described and the scenarios that led up to it, I see a pretty good recipe for a gun shy dog. I'm not arrogant enough to call myself an expert, but I have trained and do fix gun shy dogs. Maybe I'm completely wrong and I wouldn't guarantee my...
I'll be the dissenter and recommend you stop. Pushing through gunshyness will only make the problem worse. I like that you were honest about her experiences with gunfire and I see a couple things that could have caused the problem. Being around clay target shooting before proper introduction is...
I just had a litter of puppies out of Cash. I expect great things from them. If you have any questions about their dogs or how great Clyde and Marilyn are to deal with, shoot me a pm. I'd be glad to answer them.
What have you done so far with introducing her to birds?
To be honest, hiding the dummy or having her find anything other than birds isn't really doing a whole lot. I wouldn't worry at all about her retrieving the dummy right now. If you want her to gain interest in it though, start using it as...
I strongly recommend Martinsen's Red Point Kennel, not too far from Sioux Falls. http://www.martinsensvizslas.com Tate and Jenny run a quality breeding program. They are extremely involved in NAVHDA and produce awesome dogs. I've seen quite a few of them run and been very impressed. One of the...
I just had a SH title put on a 8 year old dog that had no expectation for steadiness for last several years while someone else owned him. Could probably finish MH this spring if I had time. Dogs can be trained at any age, but it is easier when they don't have bad habits to start with.
My honest suggestion, do away with the wing on a string and wait for the trainer to introduce birds properly. There isn't a professional trainer I know that uses a wing on a string to teach pointing. It is best done with live birds and them using their nose, not their eyes.
