How should I have handled this

If there was no vet available. On the tailgate I would fill with neosporen (keeps the hair out of wound) ,shave the surrounding area, totally clean with lots of pressurized saline. Then spot weld it with 3m vetbond (I am not confident with a stapler). And be at the vet when they open.

    Steady to flush and shot?

A positive to steady to flush in a pointing breed is stop to flush. This allows you to catch up and handle the dog for any stragglers. Especially handy on prairie birds

Pheasants Forever- SCAM or do they help upland hunters?

If you look at financials for PF the bulk of the annual revenue is from government grants through the pitman-Robertson funds. That is why they partner with states so they can get a portion of the states pitman allocation. They spend more in advertising than all the banquets and memberships...

How far do you let your dogs go?

I posted on the previous tread and was just commenting on my gps set up and did not intend to side track the tread. I run GSPs My breeder has always told me that you can make the dog hunt close but can not make them hunt big. I hunt a lot of public ground and do quite well( bird finds...

    Sportdog vs garmin

Yeah I guess I should have said that I don’t let them get that far on pheasants. But quail in fence rows and draws sure saves a lot of walking Prairie birds also. I hunt GSPs. Still get to see a lot of work because they point on first scent and will relocate when I get close.

    Sportdog vs garmin

I have run an alpha 100 with the tt-20 tracking collar with a garmin watch. Also run a 550 if correction are needed. I don’t like how u can’t easily adjust correction levels on the alpha units. Haven’t had any problems with this set up and my dogs are big runners frequently over 1000 yards...

Final rise says if you can while your bottom you can load a bird in the vest. I have bad mobility in both shoulders and can easily load my final rise.

    Remington 1100 magnum.. issues

I have several 1100’s and the only time I have cycling problems is from plastic buildup in the chamber. Scrubbing the chamber really good with a brass brush has always worked well for me.

    Opening weekend

Anyone get out opening weekend? Hunted Friday with low expectations but after seeing 2 coveys on the road thought I might actually get into birds. Had a great hunt saw 5 big coveys and a few pheasants on the day not counting the 2 coveys on the road. A lot better than the last few opening...
