28 gauge for early season pheasants

I have shot a bunch in SD in late Nov/early Dec with a 28 ga and 7/8 or 1 oz loads of 5's or 6's. I usually concentrate on killing all the ones up close and let the 50 plus yards ones continue on. The 28 will kill them dead at 35 yards, which is most of the ones killed.

    Findings Birds?

I've been out four times 2-3 hours apiece. Have yet to fire a shot. I'm about one hunt from selling a dog and quitting again...for good. I saw coveys early in the fall while driving to work, etc. haven't seen one along the road in 90 days.

    Findings Birds?

I am in NW Missouri, not finding many birds, but honestly it's too hot, and too much cover. We need snow to put them in the draws and hedgerows. It's kind of hit and miss, but mostly miss. I have a farm in NW mo, saw two different coveys in the yard in the summer (different sized birds) and...

    Youth Upland Season/MO Forecast

Yes, there are lots of crops still in. I'm probably not going out till after deer season, let a few hard frosts hit and beat down some cover as well as get the crops out.

I haven't gone out yet, but there are some quail around. Our farm is in the NW Mo, near Eagleville, Mo.

    Youth Upland Season/MO Forecast

What area were you hunting SDavis? I haven't been out yet, but hopefully this weekend. It seems that the population is fairly good in my area. Not quite like the 70's though! I have a young dog (9mo) but have shot 60 penned birds over her, so she is getting in the game.

    New Choke For Citori 725

yes, I'm aware of that. The problem is that, say you need an improved Mod choke, you don't know what the heck to order. From what I've seen, the F is full, the rest are a guess. Given that info, I'd order a Briley IM!

    2017 Hatch Info

I don't know how bad the storms will hurt. The timing probably wasn't good at all. I would guess that in our area, the birds were either not hatched or very small, which isn't good. At my house, about 5 inches followed by three more the next day. A few miles north it was 8-9 followed by...

    New Choke For Citori 725

The factory Browning chokes have a reputation (not good), at least with trapshooters and SC guys. I have always had good luck with Briley.

    2017 Hatch Info

Same here, and our family farm is in NW Missouri. I grew up in the 70's (60 yrs old), so hunting all day and not seeing a bird doesn't work for me. It seems we see a few more every year lately, so I bought a pup, first one I've had in 25 years. There is absolutely no quail hunting pressure...

    Sit vs Sit/Stay

I don't know that I even know the best way, but if I give a sit or down and the dog moves, I take them right back to the exact spot, 'sit' again, and leave. If the dog moves, we do it all again. Then a treat or a toy when it's done correctly. It usually doesn't take all that long before they...

    Sit vs Sit/Stay

Which one of those situations can't you just tell him to down? My point is that if I tell a sit, it means both, otherwise does sit mean 10 seconds, 20, or till the dog is tired of it. I can down mine in the yard, go get the mail, pick up a leash, feed a horse, he'll still be there. Holding a...
