Trip Report from 11-7 through 11-10

Wow, can't remember the last time we got sunburned pheasant hunting! Everyday was mid 60's with nary a cloud in the sky. Luckily our 6 came fairly early each day and we were able to shut the dogs down by 2PM. Bird numbers are definitely down, we probably only saw 20-30 birds a day besides the...

    Anyone hunting?????

Just got back from our 2nd trip out and we struggled compared to early November. My fear of the snow seemed well founded. Half the birds had relocated to farm lots and we lost a lot of cover in the ditches either by drifting or flattened by the weight of the snow. The cover that held birds was...

    Early November Hunt

My PC has been down for a couple of weeks so I wasn't able to post any photos from our trip. We hunted the 8th - 12th. We ended up two short of 30 and had a good time. The winds kicked up the last two days and made it much tougher. The bird numbers seem to be about what they were last year...

    Conspiracy Theorists

Just returned from SD on Thursday, 28 out 30 for us, About the same amount of birds as last year. Fewer crops in and in different locations as last year. I think that has a lot to do with bird numbers in certain areas. Our hot section last year didn't have a bird on it... no food for miles! Saw...

    Spring Photos

Everyone has heard roosters cackling, right?! I myself had never actually seen one cackle. I was not aware of the wing flap and mini strut he does before he cackles. While out photographing strutting turkeys lately I've had a few encounters with roosters doing their thing this spring as well...

    Just Back from Miller, SD

Good catch 1pheas4! It was the smallest rooster we've ever shot. I actually took a photo of it in my buddies hands to show the game warden in case we got checked. It had just the beginnings of a bump for spurs! It's coloring was very light.

    Just Back from Miller, SD

Well we finally made it over on December 2nd, originally slated for the 10th of November but cancelled due to the winter storm we would have had to drive through. We primarily hunt ditches and we feared a serious loss of hunting area due to the snow. Although the snow was gone from the fields...

    current snow depths

I use the dot cameras to get a feel for what it looks like. http://www.safetravelusa.com/sd/cameras/ I used to have a site that had really accurate snow depth but I can't locate, I'll keep trying to find it!

That's some sweet looking property! Can't believe you don't have any snow, we're buried in it here in the Twin Cities. Nice work SDJIM!

Hunting Lodge & Land in Miller

Sad to report but Vince died several years back. I used to call him Dr. Death as all his business's (pheasant cleaning, headstones, long distance hearse service), had to do with dead things! He was a great guy and his wife Bobby too! He charged a buck fifty a bird when I first used him, we...
