    Miller area lodging

Lodging Try the Dew Drop Inn across the road from Super 8. I have been there many times, last in 2014. They are dog friendly. Well prepared bird cleaning room with running water and heat, a freezer, and coffee in the morning. Otherwise there is a small motel in Highmore west of Miller. There...

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Road hunting I was in central SD in late November 2014. We were driving to view some cover in a field to determine how to hunt (we had permission). A truck with some hunters stopped us and asked if we knew any areas to road hunt. There was no cover in the ditches here so I gave them directions...

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

road hunt Farmers seem to blend road hunters hunting from their vehicles with ditch hunters. In the past I have had even local women stop and tell me I was hunting a good ditch. I was surprised, as I expected a bashing. I have had farmers tell me where a good ditch was rather than allowing me...

What do you do with your birds?

Meat I hunted in SD and ND where farmers use a lot of pesticides. These chemicals end up in the birds fat layer under the skin. So, everyone skins birds in these states. I often stir fry breast and thigh meat. The trick is not bacon, it is to heat the meat until just barely done. It will be...

Franchi Instinct SL vs. CZ Redhead

Cheap guns Both will work if they fit you. Don't expect long term quality.

Cororado or Kansas quail and Pheasant

I am planning to be in the Denver area on November 16, 2014. I would like to spend a few days hunting birds over my spaniel in either Eastern CO, Western KS or possibly SW Nebraska. I am starting from scratch here as I know little about these areas, other than I shot quail in Kansas near...

    12 guage or 16 guage?

weight and stuff There can be great differences in weight. For example I've owned Fox shotguns in both 12 and 16 gauge. The 16's are typically 6-1/4 to 6-1/2 pounds whereas 12's are seldom under 7 pounds. The recoil can be significant in a 16 if you choose to shoot magnums which are 1-1/4 ounce...

Franchi Instinct SL vs. CZ Redhead

You might want to look for a used Beretta O/U. You may be able to get one without expanding your price range very much. The CZ U mention is too heavy and the Franchi is too light in weight for 12 with the loads most people use on pheasant.

    12 guage or 16 guage?

Dead Pheasant I tend to agree with Uncle Buck. A 16 gauge is a pleasure to hunt with and is entirely adequate for wild pheasant. That said, I use a double with IC and usually IM in the other barrel. IM may be a bit easier to hit with than some of the tight full patterns produced in old full...
