Spirit Lake - coming alone with Lab - After Thanksgiving Weekend

Can confirm lots of birds in the cattails. Also can confirm very much not frozen yet. My wet feet will also say that things are somewhat frozen up enough to where you don’t know you’re on the ice under the snow until it’s deep enough to go over your boots once you finally break through.

Spirit Lake - coming alone with Lab - After Thanksgiving Weekend

Just got back from hunting Saturday through this morning. Hunted all public lands, and saw one rooster for every thirty hens. Dogs had a great time with the number of overall birds, but seemed to be annoyed that none of them were being shot at! Managed to bring a few home though at least. As...

Spirit Lake - coming alone with Lab - After Thanksgiving Weekend

Myself and my two dogs are headed in that general area this Saturday through Monday. Saturday looks to be interesting weather wise, but between kids and work, those are the days that I can fit in, so that’s when we go! Hopefully I can find the birds galore field that Bob speaks of!

Can anyone provide me with a motel referral in NW that allows dogs??

I was going to suggest the South T in Spencer. Stayed there a few a years back. Nothing fancy but you could back right up to the door and was dog friendly, but a quick google search shows the motel is now a pile of rubble. The Reston Inn allows dogs, but charges a ridiculous amount for them, and...

    Injury Help

Emergency vets tend to me more experienced in trauma and severe illness. Not taking anything away from their abilities, but orthopedics isn’t their forte. I’d go to your normal vet to get their opinion, and possibly another vet (just like we humans seek out second opinions), and then make the...

    Eating Mice?

I’ve heard that pheasants can eat mice and snakes and such, but didn’t really know that they would, until my dog caught this one today. DNR land stocked bird, but apparently it’s got some survival skills that it’s learning to eat what it can find.

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Tried for an hour or so after the heavier rain finally stopped yesterday on some stocked DNR land. Wasn't expecting to find much left on a Sunday afternoon, which turned out to be the case, but sunsets like these are just as good as a bird on some days in my opinion.

    Garmin Delta XC Collars

Thanks for the replies. As it turns out, the new SE collars are actually compatible with the old delta XC transmitters, so I ended up just ordering a new SE collar and it paired up without issue. Might still contact collar clinic to see about a possible repair to the nonfunctional collar.

    Garmin Delta XC Collars

Taking a shot here... I have two dogs I run, both have the Garmin Delta XC collars. One collar stopped taking a charge one day; so I purchased a replacement battery and swapped out the old one. Plugged it in, proper lights came on and after a few hours LED was solid green showing full charge...

    Late December Trip

Hey all. I made the trip Monday morning and headed back yesterday afternoon. Overall was a good trip. Weather certainly left something to be desired, but we can't control Mother Nature. We stayed in Spencer and hunting within an hour of town all days. Hunted Monday late morning through early...

    Late December Trip

Thanks again for all the info, guys. One last question/opinion… Thoughts on staying in Storm Lake or Spencer? Looks like lots more public land near Spencer, but as someone posted, is this area going to have been much harder hit being closer to MN? Also, looks like the weather gets nice and...

    Late December Trip

Thanks for all the replies. I’d be heading from southern Wisconsin, so the drive isn’t too far. (5-6 hrs). Considering there are basically 0 birds where I am, IA provides a much better chance of some action for the dogs. I’ll be happy to report back if I end up making the trip. I have the public...

    Late December Trip

Thinking about making a trip to NW part if the state sometime the week of December 19 for a few days. Just one guy and two dogs, planning on hunting public land. 1. Looks like there is a muzzleloader season open that week. Does that bring a lot of deer hunters out to share the land with, or is...

    Chamberlain or Aberdeen?

We found one rattlesnake west river last year...the first day we were there it was close to 70 and sunny. It got colder after that and we never saw another. From what I undrrstand, as long as it's cold you shouldn't have to worry about snakes.

    Chamberlain or Aberdeen?

Our group hunted around Chamberlain last year. There is plenty of public land around the MO River on the east side, and even more if you head west of the river. Plenty of birds as well. Good luck!
