    Opening weekend reports?

Ya crops are being harvested and ground was very dry...until today. Got lots of rain today. Going to be sunny and warm for a few days now. We got our limit again today. Had to hunt several strips. Had a field with cattails surrounded by cut corn. Flushed several deer, who then flushed about 50...

    Opening weekend reports?

Could have been a few more hens on the other side of the field. I know we saw a lot of birds and only a few escaped. Pretty much same deal today. Limited out in half a day. Birds are mostly in corn which is too big for us, or in tree lines. Not too many in the shorter grass. Saw a couple...

    Opening weekend reports?

Day 1 (Sunday) of my 5 day hunt was great. 5 of us flushed 3 hens and 18 roosters in 2.5 hours and shot 15 roosters. Great first day. We're in the Redfield area. Saw plenty of other birds up route 281 from Mitchell. Drove around quite a bit just north of Mitchell and saw roosters in ditch right...

Question On GPS Download from SD GFP

It looks like it's updated. I don't see an option to select last years. Why would you anyway? You risk hunting on private land.

    Public land maps

I assume so. I don't see an option to select last years. I saved a PDF version to my cloud drive as well.

    Mitchell motels

I've stayed at the Coachlight Motel. Clean and dog friendly too.

    Favorite shotgun?

Browning Citori 725 Field model in 12 ga, with a Beretta A3901 Semi-Auto 12 ga as a backup. I always take two. I never miss with my Browning:)

    Kent Bismuth & Pheasants?

This may be useful... "With a gravimetric density of 7.86 grams per cubic centimeter (gms/cc), steel is the lightest of the bunch, followed by bismuth, at 9.60 gms/cc; Tungsten-Iron, at 10.30; Tungsten Matrix, at 10.60; lead, at 11.10; and, the real heavyweight in the ring, Hevi-Shot, at 12...

    Right around the corner!

Headed to SD for a guided hunt Oct 23 - 25, and then 2 more days of self-guided hunting on public land. Just did a hunt at my club Oct. 1st. Shot 4 of 5 birds. I'm ready!

I'll stick with steel. I have had good luck with it as I believe I've found the right size for my chokes. My son has fixed chokes in his shotgun so he's been trying non-steel, non-lead options. He likes bismuth so far.

Hevi-Metal, Hevi-Steel, Hevi-Shot...I see boxes labeled all three. What I'm not sure about is I see the content of each hevi-etal shell has two layers of shot, with the size of steel shot labeled on the box and the hevi-shot up to 3 sizes smaller. I guess you can call the Hevi-Metal hybrid...

Is Hevi-shot considered a toxic load?

    First sd trip

Can't really say. It's really what was said earlier. If you're less than about 30 yards and a good shot then #6 steel is enough. I think #4 or #5 shot is a nice load for just about anything over 20 yards. Whether you use 2 3/4" or 3" round is a personal preference. I also think wild birds are...

My son used 3" Kent Bismuth #4 shot yesterday and they worked very well. Birds went down just like lead.

We have two springers, normal size. Kind of stocky and heavy boned. Great heart and nose. The older one is a Master Hunter and the youngest one is just a year old so he is just getting trained. Cattails are tough for just about any dog. The only ones that don't seem to care much are labs...
