    Mankato, Kansas

Mankato (Jewell County) is a pretty good area especially the western part of the county and up around Lowvell Reservoir has some nice areas. I live in Smith County (county located just west of Jewell) and there are some great walk-in areas in the northern parts of the county. They are remote so...

KS to get $1.5M for WIHA!!!

KS is top-notch and very progressive with their WIHA and WIFA programs. I'm very thankful to live in a state that recognizes and respects the hunting traditions. Thank you Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks staffers and thank you to Jake George with KDWP. Jake's a great friend of mine and...

Extend Kansas Season to end of Feb.

retrvrman That is true. Personally, we still don't shoot hens on our properties (just doesn't seem right as a traditionalist) but there aren't any bag limits. There is a form that you need when transporting the birds to say they were taken on a Controlled Shooting Area though. And, you can't...

Anyone else get "THE LETTER" today.

RE We got our land approved and the paperwork is already signed....Ahhh! Feels great to be able to contribute back to the conservation initiative and I'm really glad they got this signup implemented. Hope they continue it for many years to come.

Extend Kansas Season to end of Feb.

Controlled Shooting Areas If you own/lease more than 160 continuous acres in KS you can get a Controlled Shooting Area license from the State. They do require you to release birds but for $200/yr it extends your upland hunting season from Sept 1st - March 31st. Most outfitters do this but we...

    New guy from Chicago

Kansas is looking strong this year for birds. Reports say it will be as good or better than last year and last year was pretty solid. The late wheat harvest and moderate rains with few days of being too hot have help tremendously. Good Luck!

    Kansas 2010 UPLAND FORECAST

Late Wheat Harvest The late wheat harvest this year in the North really helped the birds get through the nesting season. I've been seeing a ton of quail and pheasants on the roads in the evenings. It's getting us pretty pumped up for the season this year. Good Luck!

    WIHA Map

Signs The WIHA areas are pretty well marked with signs so you shouldn't get too lost when your driving around. The properties will be marked with the KDWP WIHA white signs. Good luck!

    Greetings from North Central KS

I just read an article from KDWP last night talking about how good the upland bird hunting was going to be this year. I've got some friends who work for KDWP and they said pheasant numbers were going to be "fair-good" in both the counties east (Jewell) and west (Phillips) of Smith County but...

    General sign-up just ended -

Besides the general sign up there are some good specific practices that you can get enrolled in such as CP-33 (quail buffers) and CP-38 SAFE buffers. I've got quite a few properties enrolled in CP-33 and they have been phenomenal for the quail populations and work great for the pheasants too.

    How to increase EBI scores.

If you're willing to take 15% less than the maximum rental rate the Govt offers you get 25 points right off the bat. The biggest factor for the EBI depends on priority areas. If your in a habitat priority area you get big points for that which others can't even touch.
