NEWS FLASH: Drought ends at Ponderosa

Wheat crop is in the bin before quail nest. There is a surprise ( at least to me) in Oklahoma that quail are nesting and succeeding in soybean fields!

Shadow I kind of liked Shadow! Good pictures, of course I took the jabber with a grain of salt, ( like this particular forum). Also his counter part from Colorado with the shorthairs, used a muzzle loader, hunted with a preacher? Boy they would have livened this up good! Sometimes we take this...

It's part of the game! I don't discount the nose or ability of a lab I have one now! Most have a superior nose to an even number of pointers, but that's an opinion. I think it depends on the game. Pheasants are a down in the mud game in my opinion. it takes what you have to do to get a shot...

GPS = no lost gundog! If you have ever lost a dog for period of time, you will not disavow a GPS. In today's hunting with either vast fields of overgrown CRP, or the converse, small hunting habitats bordered by dog dangerous roadways, or locations, or a system for which I am familiar with, low...

    Torn ACL

Acl I had a Lab have it in 1991. Had a grafted on ligament with the nylon for reinforcement. The nylon caused irritation and would not heal. Back in and remove, but scar tissue strengthened the joint. Vet thought it might work. It did! No further problems ever with full movement. Other leg was...

    most desirable gamebirds

If you can handle them! I agree! Bigger, tough, with an ingrained wildness. My least favorite are chuckars, wander around like clowns in the field, no upland camouflage, with their desert plumage, difficult to get to fly, and mostly short distance flyers. Watch the Bird dog challenge on TV! I...

    The West

Public Lands Some items you think are in the rear view mirror seem to comeback and revisit us again! I think it would be a mistake, in retrospect I think it was a mistake to transfer a lot of U.S. property to private hands. This was also a hot agenda in Nevada primary, where the state is...

    Polywad

My little girls learned to shoot on Gram Crakr's. I love the report like a ladyfinger on fourth of July. Great dispersed pattern, pattern before velocity I think. It will verify the value of precision ammo available these days rather than mass produced Walmart wonders.

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

I believe you can have a loaded gun in the car! in S.D. The fact that teenagers road hunted does not surprise me in the least....I probably would have too! Which makes me dubious about the legality, and the adults who do the same thing now. Some do that here, illegal, but they do anyway. Please...

Tips on making bobwhites more wild?

wildness I think we all know that pheasants are far more wary than quail originally released, some sub species better than others! But I can assure you with a little work you can produce quail which are indistinguishable from wild, case in point have have merged coveys, I can tell them apart...

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Iowa has similar law. Don't seem to have the same issue. I am not real whippy on the law, but it's been that way forever. If they want to make a change perhaps lobby the state legislature to change the law? Part of the issue is there is nobody to ask! We have no road hunting law in Kansas...

    Buckwheat - any good

I do Proso Millet for doves. I have used buckwheat for duck food and quick cover in waterfowl areas with great results. The millet will leave some bare ground a big plus for doves.

    Military Base

I went to a trial there years ago. Lots of areas which are off limits here and there, due to war games and un-exploded ordinance. Also serpentine wire all over the place will slice your dog in two presto! you too! There were a lot of birds. These days I believe you have to go through...
