I have a little bit different take on this, just a personal observation I made a few years ago. There was a patch of CRP across the road from a harvested bean field and some fingers of cover that were on the bean field that I had permission to hunt on. The CRP owners released some birds for...
One year I was hunting alone late season in the snow with a Brittany pup. We flushed over 60 birds from a small cattail slough in a pasture, they spooked way ahead and didn't get any shots. Most of them went one direction towards a public area so I followed hoping to pick up a straggler or...
That's what I thought it might be. Normally I wouldn't walk across the street to shoot doves, but I hear there's scads of them. Might be a person could trade it for a duck and goose hunt there, guess thats really something. Have a friend that went to South America to shoot parakeets, shot so...
Sunday I shot a banded pheasant at about 6:15 pm. We were about 55 miles from Mitchell, so we were too far away to make it for the 7 pm drawing even if we did notice the band, which we didn't until cleaning the bird later. Called customer service Monday morning and talked to the manager. He...
Anyone used Black Oilseed Sunflowers for food plots? Picked up a bag at our PF banquet this weekend. Birds seem to like them, but what about deer, do they leave them alone? Buddy has to replant about 26 acres of CRP this spring. He's planning on heavily discing the existing stand of CRP...
Don't waste your time, birds are way down in that area due to two bad winters in a row and cold, wet springs. If you are coming from Colorado, SW Nebraska or NW Ks would be a much smarter move
Well this has certainly been fun reading, guess I stirred up a hornet's nest. I need to clarify a couple of assumptions some posters have made on this subject, and then give some of my observations and assumptions.
First off I will state the party that was shooting by the combine the second...
Had a situation in SD on opening weekend. We had permission to hunt a cornfield that was being harvested and shot a couple birds that had been flushed by a combine doing the last rows. The owner suggested that we do it so we did. A federal warden had been watching us and came over after we...
Honestly the reason they do that is cause you stopped walking, they got spooked and took off. Maybe you should stop more often:) Anyone who hunts waterfowl can tell you about all the times they stepped out to take a leak and here comes the birds. Why, because they saw the motion and it...
Sunday, we were hunting a few miles to the west of you and bumped into a nice covey. My hunting partner took 3 out of it. First time we have seen quail in that area or anywhere in SD for that matter. Have hunted the state for 14 years now and probably the worst opener we have had for pheasants.
Probably not such a bad idea for several reasons. If you subscribe to the belief that Pheasant populations are primarily habitat dependent and that surplus roosters only compete with hens for food and prime cover, why wouldn't you want to thin them down as much as possible. After all roosters...
