    Labor Day SD

To quote BieriSetters: "To be honest it's going to be a tough year for public ground acres and more than likely a ton of competition...." That sums up the outlook for 2017. Too few birds for too many hunters. My personal observations while scouting different areas in SD since Sept 8th...

Talked with our rancher west of Mobridge.

Looper, you are fortunate to have such a good relationship with that rancher and you got a very honest report. We have many friends living across the whole state which keep us well informed of the hunting conditions. Although several of them are hunters too, unfortunately none of them own...

    2017 Pheasant SD Survey

What are you drinking? I didn't read that anywhere in their report. I believe SD's GFPs and the states local economies thrive on "out of state" hunters license fees and what they spend on food, lodging, hunting supplies, booze, etc. just a PA does when it comes to Whitetail Deer hunting...

    2017 Pheasant SD Survey

No. If Warren Buffet was a pheasant hunter he would most likely purchase several sections of land in SD and have a caretaker maintain it specifically for upland game habitat. I do agree with the rest of what you stated.

2017 south dakota pheasant hunting roadside survey

I certainly didn't take any comments of any bashing going on. Just differences of opinions formed by individuals with varying scenarios. Even though I make my home in PA, I check in on the site to keep informed of what is happening with the pheasant habitat and population in SD. My wife and...

    end of season hunt

I take it "nylon" is a typo on your part. Unfortunately, I believe "pay to hunt" will be the only way to hunt pheasants in the future. I wouldn't mind paying a so called "trespass fee", but as much as I love pheasant hunting (more than deer hunting), I will give up pheasant hunting before I...

    New Hunting Partner

Beautiful dog. After loosing our Rusty, a Golden to cancer last April, we are about to welcome a new Golden into our home the second week in January. An 8 week old pup. By the way, I'm 70 years old. When we lost Rusty, I said no more. It's too hard loosing your best friend and companion...

    Bathing Golden Retriever?

Being our Goldens are part of our family and house dogs as well as hunters, I always bathed them about every two or three weeks or at least take them for a swim in clear creek water. I do think every day would not be good for them. Ask your Vet what shampoo they recommend. A good dog shampoo...

    More Birds Than Last Year

With a 50% ratio on his properties that very well could be. :D

    More Birds Than Last Year

Well stated. I think you captured the whole picture of what is happening in SD today. That is my observation as well.

Slowing the dog on a running rooster

Maybe a group therapy session? :) I guess, gone are the fun days of hunting. Hunting is taken to serious today. Oh, the days, I was out of breathe keeping up with my bird dogs chasing after those pheasants, they were great flushing Ruffed Grouse and circling rabbits too. Yes sir, the fun...

    More Birds Than Last Year

Unbelievable! Of course that gestimated number of lost birds does help to brag about the high population of birds that were in the fields for a "for profit" enterprise. If not that, like others have said, something is seriously wrong.

    Restaurants

Speaking of bakeries, one of the best I found is in Platte, SD. It is located inside the Platte Food Center grocery store. Eat in or carry out. When ever we are camping in the Snake Creek Recreation Area, sometimes I would make a short run to Platte just for a coffee and baked goods.

Well, those three don't exist anymore.

    PA Pheasant Program

We had a very healthy population of wild pheasants back in the 50 and 60s which covered a wide area here in PA with healthy broods every year. No one every really explained what caused their demise even in the most prime areas. What really happened to them? Will the same thing happen to our...
