Remove parts....

The only thing I would be cautious about is debris from the steel wool. Springs and various parts tend to hook on to steel wool and catch on them like hair. Might cause more issues then it would solve. Just a good cleaning with a soft tooth brush and a good gun specific solvent like Hoppe's...

The gun will fire just fine with a shell on the carrier. Nothing dangerous. Don't worry about that lever.

IMO, that bolt handle was never fully snapped into place. I have three friends and myself with new A5's and not a one has had a issue. Some have put 1,000's of rounds through their's. Also, it doesn't matter if you have a shell slip the out of the mag tube onto the carrier. The gun with fire...

You were saying it had nicely figured wood. sometimes highly figured wood, is weak wood, This may have been the case.
