Yet another rooster slaughter in SW KS

Good luck with that!! Do you see the size of the feet on those guys? Those are hobbits. Impossible to catch and insatiable appetites. The Kansas pheasants are doomed.

    SW Kansas Hunt

I think east of Colorado and north of Oklahoma nails it down well enough.

    hen question

I wouldn't leave a cripple if I could help it - finish it off, but I wouldn't take it with me either.

    SxS

I've shot O/Us, semi-autos, and SxSs and I shoot best on pheasants and quail with my 6 1/4 lb 16 gauge SxS. I don't notice the barrels at all. However, I do think the quicker you mount and shoot, the more important good fit is going to be. My 16 fits me better than any of my other guns. I've...

He sounds like a natural. I can't see your pic though, except for a strip at the top.

Trego, Graham, Ness, Gove Co. - 6 Day Hunt

We hunted a different part of the state (SW corner) but noticed the same thing. A lot fewer birds to be seen while driving around. In the actually hunting, some fields were about the same as last year, and some were worse. It was the warmest conditions we've ever hunted in though and the...

    That "Primal Connection" of Hunting

The NY times article mentions Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma. I really enjoyed it, learned a lot about where most of our food comes from, and as a hunter enjoyed following the author along as he sought out someone to teach him how to hunt. I also appreciated his conclusion that...

    WIHA etiquette

Growing up back east, where hunters always outnumber the pheasants, this was a really hard thing for me to learn. Our group has teamed up with other groups that arrived on big sections the same time we did and its great how quickly the tensions ease when you start planning a hunt together.

    Plucking pheasants

Onpoint, I agree with you on the better flavor of plucked birds. It is a pain to pluck them dry, but worth it in my opinion. Much more moist. I even stuff butter under the skin before roasting them. The guys I know that skin them, most of my buddies among them, don't waste anything. We...

    Guides with Guns

In short, yes. We put up with a couple of birds in the past because the land access was great and honestly we didn't really know what the norm was, but last year was over the top. We said we didn't want a repeat, hoping to turn things around, and that was pretty much the end of it.

    Guides with Guns

I was wondering what everyone's take is on the Guides with Guns phenomenon. Have you hunted with a guide that carried a gun and shot his limit, maybe "helped" some of the other guys shoot theirs? Is this a common thing? We had a guide until this year. He dropped us because we complained...

Recommended areas for combo pheasant/quail hunt

dogman, GoBadgers, thanks for the cover tips. The cover you describe is very different from our usual WIHA areas. The one covey we did find on a WIHA was near an old tractor shed. On the private land we hunt, there are a lot more trees, brush lines, old farm equipment, etc.
