    C'mon -- let's hear some reports

Quail seem to be up Hunted 3 hours yesterday in NE Missouri. Found one 20 bird covey and a 15 bird covey. Shot one bird from each covey. Today I hunted for 3 hours and found one 10 bird covey, chose not to shoot. I am pleasantly surprised by bird numbers this season.

    C'mon -- let's hear some reports

I was pleasantly surprised to find a big 30 bird covey and a 10 bird covey and one rooster. Quail seem to be on the upswing despite one...

    MO's Hatch

Saw a male on the road, heard another calling in a different location. Farmer friend of mine has seen chicks! I also saw at least turkey 15 poults with 2 hens, they could fly pretty darn well and were the size of a Chukar. Tons of fawns too. I would say the game faired pretty well after a tough...

Warm Season Grass for filter strips

Thanks for the input. It sounds as if I should go with little bluestem, sideoats gramma and maybe some switchgrass, but the NRCS needs to approve this? I was thinking of planting plum thickets for the shrubs, does anyone have other suggestions for shrubs? My only concern is that the USDA soil...

Warm Season Grass for filter strips

I am interested in putting in filter strips on a hilly Northeast Missouri farm. There are a few pheasant around but more quail. I have been told that fescue is better than warm season grasses as it grows in mats (like sod) rather than clumps (like warm season grasses). Does anone have experience...

James River CREP Acreage - Anybody Else Underwhelmed?

CREP was fine 3 of us hunted CREP on a Thursday midweek and killed 6 birds, cover was spotty on some and excellent on others. I found it to be a great supplement to the WPA's and the state should keep the program going! Well worth it in my book.

    How did you do?

More birds this year I only hunted Sunday in West Central IA. I started on a public spot and saw about 5 hens before shooting 2 roosters. Then I went to a friends CRP. It was great with about 20 birds seen, atleast half of them were roosters. I worked the dogs on the wild birds before finally...

Looking for birds to train with ??

Try Rice Farms by Bong recreation area in Wisconsin 262 539-3374, you can also train at Bong, but you need a permit available at the Ranger Office there. You should ask you breeder about how and where to train. I have GSP's and thus get a lot of help from NAVHDA, but that is for pointing dogs...

    Wild birds

I have been on 3 hunts (December 2010) at 2 locations and have seen about 30 birds and we have killed 5 between my 16 year old son and myself. If you have the habitat there will be some birds, especially late in the season.

    Clean up around WIHA's

I found the same thing in South Dakota this year, everything from cardboard beer cases, clay pigeon boxes, and tons of plastic water bottles. I expected more from fellow hunters. This is a great message to get out, and we should all try to pick up the trash of other hunters and educate fellow...
