Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Big Rand, you need to read it again: it clearly states "and the game must have taken flight from within or be flying over the rights-of-way." RLH

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Disagree This discussion just proves why there is tension between some land owners and hunters. I disagree that you can shoot at the bird if it is over private property no matter where it originated from. The sentence before the quoted states: "Hunters can take only small game (except...

    Preserve Hunting in March?

Preserve Hunting I wouldn't worry about disturbing the hens they don't start nesting until late April or May plus a mild winter. A rooster can service up to 15 hens so as long as there are wild birds left the hens will be taken care of. On preserves you will pay as stated above and with the...

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Ditch Hunting Yes, you are correct it is vague and can be interpreted both ways. I encourage road hunting and it provides the non land owners an opportunity and a reason to return to hunt SD. The sweet 16 just needs to be loaded and the gun will do all of the work for you. Good Luck. RLH

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

This is out of the 2015 SD Hunting Regulation. See the sentence about the bird must originate from the right of way or is in the right of way to engage, it doesn't say you can shoot over private property. Hunting on Public Road Rights-of-Way Laws and rules governing trespass and motor vehicles...

Possible off-season trip back to SD.....

Good Luck With the weather lately I would watch the ice depth if you are still going. It has been warm lately. Bitter was a hot spot a few weeks ago for perch.

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Response I don't want to sound like the land owners quoted in the thread, but after a bushel of bad apples breaking the law, sometimes we are short fused. Also to press charges for hunting trespassing which is different than criminal trespassing laws in SD. To press charges I have to file...

Road hunting etiquette. Land owner and Hunter

Land Owner in SD As a land owner in South Dakota I have to say that there are more bad (Law Breaking) hunters than law abiding hunters that road hunt. Probably because they get caught up in the excitement of the hunt or don't read and abide by the regulation in the front of our hunting...

    Habitat Project 2016

Cover I would plant trees or fast growing shrubs around the field. I'm a tree guy and plant as many as I can on the prairie. This will also help hold the birds and other wildlife, but the first few years is labor intensive keeping the weeds out and watering. Keep us posted on your project. RLH

    Buckwheat - any good

Buck Wheat A lot of farmers don't like neighbors using buckwheat because it is so hard to kill and the birds transplant the seed in their droppings. I would look at some other wheat grasses or seed producing grasses. If it is a wet area we planted an area with Canary grass and oats mix; the...

    Apple trees

Apple Trees I haven't had much luck with apple trees. Make sure you control the weeds and put 1/4 inch square mesh around them to prevent the rodents from eating the bark no matter what time of year. We have two old trees on our place with a crabtree. The deer love the apples and I place a...

    Posting Land

Nick: To clarify, do out of state hunters think that if the land is not posted it is free to hunt. Each state has different ways to mark the property to indicate that it is private property and no hunting or trespassing is allowed. I put signs up every year but they end up being shot. I will...

    Posting Land

Technically the land owner owns the land to the middle of the road and pays taxes on it, but it is considered right of way or public easement. In South Dakota you can hunt small game in the right of way as long as you engage the wildlife while it is in the right of way, with caveats on the...

    Posting Land

I would like to get the opinion of out of state hunters on posting of land in South Dakota. Trespassing on land and posting of property varies by state so that?s why I?m asking. It seems that even if I place no hunting or trespassing signs on my property if it doesn't have a fence around it...
