    Opening Day Reports

Opening week haven't had a chance to post since returning from hunting opening week. 3 guys hunted 5 days. We averaged 2 birds per day per hunter, so overall good report, particularly considering hot weather conditions. We took many breaks and were unable to hunt as much as normal due to the...

Doesn't Get Any Better Than This

Great posts everyone. I share similar thoughts most every time we make the trip and when reflecting on the good times during the long ride home. I only wish it were a longer season and/or I could make more trips.

    Franchi 12 ga over/under

Franchi SL I have the 20 gauge SL. I bought it primarily for grouse hunting. I chose the SL because I wanted a lighter weight gun for carrying all day. You can carry this gun all day and not notice it. The 20g has minimal recoil despite low weight unless you shoot a heavier load. The L is...

    Boots?

Same as Dakotazeb, I bought a pair of the Irish Setter Havocs this fall as well. I like an uninsulated boot and I really like these boots so far. As you commented....very comfortable. I used a lot this season and they seemed to hold up well.

Franchi Instinct SL vs. CZ Redhead

Did buy a Franchi Instinct SL in the 20 gauge this fall. Took about a month to find one. I was able to find the L but the SLs seemed to go very quickly. Sales rep said the SLs go as quick as they put them on the floor. At any rate...nice gun. Certainly nothing you would use for heavy trap...

Updates for Weather and Birds in Aberdeen Area

We were out 4 days over opener. 3 guys and 30 birds. Hunted probably 2/3 public and 1/3 private.....probably shot about 50% of total on each. More hunting pressure then we have experienced the past few years. Certainly could have limited but for less than spectacular shooting. Hard to find...

I came across this video lady year. The technique actually works pretty well. I have not had any problems. Enjoy legs much more now

    Nd vs sd

I will share a few thoughts that I hope you find helpful. BTW, my friend has a couple small munsterlanders....great dogs. I happen to run springers but if I ever add a pointing dog, it would be a SM. I have hunted in both ND and SD for many years. We probably hunt 80% on public and 20%...

    Irish Setter Havoc Boots

I bought a pair and have used them a few times grouse hunting. They're very comfortable and relatively lightweight. So far I like them but I hope they hold up. I do hunt a lot so will post back at end of season.

Franchi Instinct SL vs. CZ Redhead

I agree. I think the Franchi SL is a really nice gun. I have had a chance to shoot and they're nice guns. Lightweight (slightly under 7 lbs I believe). Good feel. Very nice O/U for the money. For hunting, I think it is a nice gun. If you do a lot of trap, with the light weight, recoil may...

    ROW tips

I agree with the post above, you should be able to find some decent public spots late season. We do mix both public and some ROW on most trips but once things freeze up and hunting pressure drops, you can find good spots. But since the birds are well educated, the best advice I can give...

    How long of a hunt?

Every dog is different. My oldest just turned 8 and still goes hard but doesnt have quite the stamina he once did. I have found hunting him about 2/3 of a day works well. Usually this is a hunt in the morning - early pm, good break in the afternoon, and then late afternoon hunt. This keeps...

Reports from opening day in SD?

We hunted in Central SD. Was worried about the reports of low numbers but still had very good trip. I think we saw as many or more then we have in past years. Just two of us hunting but we each brought back 10 birds (total 20) over 4.5 days of hunting. Hunted all public areas. Had plenty of...
