    New upland vest

I have the Final Rise Summit XT and It's a great vest when you know you'll be walking tons of miles and need water but I only do that occasionally on out of state hunts. Here in Iowa, like Remy said I'm constantly in and out of the truck driving to different pieces of land and only walking at...

Going back the next day to look for wounded bird.

I've done it! Winged one pretty good on a Saturday, went back to the same draw on a Sunday and he tried to flush but couldn't get more than 3ft off the ground and I finished him off. Worth a shot!

Are you Break Open 2 barrel (O/U and SXS) or Autoloader guy

Auto's for me, I agree with A5 above, I think it's a mental thing. I've tried several O/U's and I just don't seem to have the same confidence I do with an Auto.

    Copper Shot?

So I was sent by Boss a preproduction pack of their soon to be on the market Warchief copper shot and they worked well. They sent me 5 Warchief shells and 5 legacy. I only hunted Saturday but went 3 for 3 with the Warchief! That was my best percentage of the season, not sure if I just shot...

    Bug Bites

I, nor any of the people I've hunted with this year have any issues with bug bites in NW IA. Maybe an allergic reaction?

    Gloves

I just picked up these last Friday and wore them through the rain/snow on Saturday and was quite impressed. Thin enough to manipulate everything yet kept my hands warm. https://www.scheels.com/p/04355203174

    Ground-pounding opinions

Oof, this is a tough one to admit and I'll probably be chastised for this but in all honesty I flip mine on and off all the time. If I feel it's a "good spot" I'll flip it off, if the dog gets birdy it's off. I always, always, always make sure the muzzle is in a safe direction though, which I do...

    Ground-pounding opinions

I won't ground pound unless it's wounded and running. I've had ducks and geese land in my spread and I'll try to startle them up in the air before I'll shoot. TBH, I don't know why I do it, just something I've always done.

    Weather Tomorrow

Who's planning to get back after it tomorrow? I unfortunately can only hunt weekends due to work so I hate to pass up an opportunity, however, supposed to be be rain/snow mixture throughout the day. Snow would be excellent, rain not so much IMO. Either way I'll be in my truck ready to go, but...

Iowa hunters, how was your opener?

It was a "different" weekend for me and the group I hunt with. What is usually a 4 or 5 person group turned into a 11 person group and the spots we hunt aren't really conducive for that many hunters. Definitely saw more birds than usual, but it just didn't have that same "feel" to it. Looking...

Old dogs still want to retrieve

I always find it's the humans that have to force the dogs to slow down for their own good, I think dogs would happily run themselves to death

Anyone give up another form of hunting all together to just hunt birds instead?

Since I became a dad about 9yrs ago, and then adding a second daughter, it's become harder and harder to go on hunts that require me to be gone extended hours/seasons. That sort of started the push to more upland hunting vs bowhunting, waterfowl, etc., but now I actually enjoy taking my oldest...
