This Weekend Hunt in West Texas

Nice. It’s been a tough year for me timing wise, but the few times I’ve gotten out - quail has been real down where I hunt in Paducah, and grass burrs have been up. I’ll have more time now to get out.

    I Think I'm Done

I hunted the Atwood/Mcdonald/Colby area and we did well on private land, so-so on WIHA. They were very jumpy though - even on private land that had not been pressured since opening weekend. Good news is we bagged some quail. First we saw up there in a good long while. We saw close to 100 birds...

    Lease prices?

hrm. Oil money is held by a select few, and I'm not one of them. I work for mine, thank you. Texas just has no public land worth a crap to hunt. If you want to hunt, and you don't own land, you lease or you drive to a state that does have public land. NM and Ks being two of the better.

Young Boy needs an Outdoor Mentor!

It's important Get them started early. My grandfather got me started very early, and I shared that experience with my kids. One of my kids enjoys hunting, the other tried it and it just wasn't for him. I'm hoping he comes around as he gets older, but that's okay if he doesn't. My daughter...

    Back from KS

rooster Yeah, he was good sized and long tail, but his spur was a tiny nub - that means first year bird, right?

crew thanks. Hunted them hard for 3 days, and this is what the mighty hunters look like now.

Time Yeah, I'd like to also, but it's just hard for me in Q4 to get out, I usually have to wait until the calendar flips before I have the flexibility to get out, so I'm always hunting the wise birds. Good for the girls anyway.

    Lease prices?

Gents, what's a good estimate for the going rate for private lease prices in north central / northwest KS? Say from around Hays to Atwood? I'd like to get into a nice long term lease private for upland.

LOST POINTER and SHORTHAIR NORTH CENTRAL KS

Yikes No doubt. It was getting down to under 10 degrees at night. My gsp was shivering in her insulated box, had to double box her in with my lab. Fine once we started hunting, but i hate to think what would happen to her overnight out there. The lab I never worry about in the cold...plus the...

    NORTHWEST to CENTRAL KANSAS?

Roads are fine I just got back from Hays and a little south of it, roads were fine. There were a few spots that drifts made it bad and I didn't chance it, and just went the long way around. There was 1 field out of about the 20 I had scouted that I didn't think I could get to. I'm sure I could...

    What a bummer

Seconded on the suoerglue My gsp had a tear in the ear, not all the way thru. I superglued it in the field, and got her to the vet later. Vet said she'd probably just scratch / shake out stitches, and said the glue was fine unless she messed with it. She hunted the next week. Only problem was...

    Back from KS

I just got back from a quick trip around the Hays area, and I saw far more birds in WIHA than I have in years past. They were really, really jumpy, even in the really cold mornings - but it beats the last few yeas that I could comb WIHA and see nothing but a few hens.

    Kansas birds bite back

I know, pretty crazy. She'll be fine. I cleaned it and wrapped it and let her hunt a little bit in a low grass field the next morning. She was still pushing hard, so I think she'll be fine.

I also have a GSP. That lab was none to happy that she didn't get to hunt any more.

    Kansas birds bite back

Made it up to your great state for some bird hunting this past week. Hunted Norton and Oberlin. I was hunting a thick grassy draw, and my lab flushed a bird right from under her. It was big and gray, and at first glance I thought it was another hen. I quickly realized it was a hawk. When the dog...
