    Hutchinson area

I was throwing around the idea of heading to the Hutchinson area tomorrow for a few hours. Has anybody hunted this area? Is it even worth the time, or must you go further west?

    pointing labs

Though some labs will point, your best bet to get a dog that is guaranteed to point is to go with one of the traditional pointing breeds. A lab/GSP cross isn't even guaranteed to point. You may get the worst of both worlds and get a dog that doesn't like to retrieve and flushes (not that...

impressions of first time in ND

I grew up in ND and have hunted there 30 years. I guess I grew up hunting unposted land, so have never felt guilty about it or that I need to ask permission. I know all the posting laws and check thoroughly before entering a property. Much of my extended family farms there and they don't post...

    dog not wanting to retrieve

He may of been through a FF program, but not a correct program. Any dog can be taught to retrieve. Granted a dog that doesn't enjoy retrieving won't do it enthusiastically, but if properly FF he better go get what you tell him, just as he better sit or whoa if you tell him. Fetch simply...

    Steady or Not.

I had mine steady to wing/shot/fall last summer during training, but that fell apart on wild birds. She is still steady to flush, and like birdshooter said she knows the difference between wild and planted birds. I took her out midseason on planted birds and was steady to WSF again. I would...

    Bird Launchers

I have a DT 509 launcher. I have had it 2 years now with no problems. It is in indispensible tool when training by yourself..I would not be without it. It comes in real handy for a young dog because you eliminate the possiblility of them catching a bird. Once they are reliably steady I went...

    Excercise during the Winter

Around here there are plenty of frozen lakes, and the snow isn't very deep on them. I usually take my dog to the lake and let her run around. When it is too cold out to do that I run her on a treadmill.

    GSP ratio is something

I think the reason you are seeing a lot of GSP's these days is there is a readily available gene pool in which you can find whatever you want. You can find a foot hunting NAVHDA type dog that loves the water, or an All Age GSP that can keep up with EP's. Also the majority of GSP's come from...

Teaching her to stay in range?

I would let dog get out there and hunt. I bet the reason the birds are flushing wild is they hear you coming and decide to leave. I have hunted wild birds in ND all my life, I let my shorthair get out there 200-300 yards. I woud say average range is 100-150yds. I have seen many a rooster...

    Upland Boots

I have a pair of Danner Sharptails, similar to the pronghorn. I would not recommend them. I got them this year, stitching is letting loose, and leak like no other boot I have ever had. I have always had Browning Boots and never had a problem with them leaking. I have yet to come home hunting...

    e-collar recommendations

I have always had tri tronics and have been very happy with them. The first one lasted me 13 years. I have a pro 100 now and highly recommend it.

    Alex area

I never made it out that way Sunday. I decided to go grouse hunting instead because there is no snow. I may stick with grouse until the snow flies, I have always had much better luck finding grouse in MN vs Pheasants.
