    Sportsman Act of 2012

The Senate voted yesterday to proceed with this bill, see results at http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=112&session=2&vote=00201. You can also see how all of the US House of Representatives voted at...

Hunting Report for the week of Nov 5th

Mitchell Area Hunted around Mitchell, SD from 11/4 – 11/8. Bird numbers were really bad. With four guys and three dogs, we only saw maybe 30 birds total and shot only 9 roosters the entire week. Last year on the same ground we shot 48 birds. There was even great cover; thick weeds along the...

    Brittany spaniel

I run a Boykin Spaniel (just Google it) on pheasants and he does a great job. I love to see when he gets birdy and starts to bounce around. I think a spaniel is the perfect size, can travel well, and is a great family dog too. One word of caution, the long hair can be a problem. The first...

“Get in the truck boys, I know where we can go…”

When I was a kid of around 15, we started going to Grainfield KS pheasant hunting. Somehow my dad got in with a group of guys that knew a farmer out there named Orvis. Orvis was a lifelong farmer, a burly man, and when he shook your hand it felt like you were shaking hands with a grizzly bear...

    Snow in SD

I see where SD got its first snow fall of the year. Out west near the Black Hills got as much as 5 in. I saw pictures of around Mitchell where they got 1-2 inches. With limited cover already and now with snow, the birds should be really bunched up. I'm dreaming of 20 bird flushes.

Birds all over the place... Just a few miles NE of

I think the whole purpose of this forum is for like minded pheasant hunters to exchange information, relive memories, and tell stories. I have been blessed to have private land to hunt, so I have never had to search for public land. But, I can’t imagine that a person would plan their trip to SD...

Anyone catch this weeks show "The Flush"

I’ve watched the Flush for a few months now. I enjoy the show. It has some great scenery and I like when they talk about the different breeds of dogs that they are hunting. They should discuss a little about the guns and ammo that they are using and mix it up with different brands and gauges...

what to expect in SD??? good or bad?

From 1995-2000, I hunted the opening week near Mitchell, SD. All private land, so the hunting wasn’t crowded, but the restaurants, stores, and bars were packed. As a younger man, I enjoyed the party atmosphere, but now I like it a little quieter. We now hunt the third week of the season and...

    Stoeger O/U?

I purchased the Stoeger Condor Field Combo about 3 years ago for around $400. This gun has interchangeable 12ga and 20ga barrels that fit to the same receiver. I was looking for an O/U gun that I wouldn’t worry about getting scratched up. I am very pleased with my gun. I never think twice...

    Another unique mount

We shot a bird that looked like that this year, but only on the wings. I thought it was just a young bird. I didn't think there was a white mutation. I guess we should have mounted it. Oh well, it will still taste good.

    cat

Nervous too We hunted north of Mitchell Nov. 7-14. When we arrived, the farmer who hosts us said that there had been reports of a mountain lion in the area and that he heard "screaming" down by the river. It sure made me nervous walking the tall grass and the thickets. Worried about me and...

Protocol on splitting up the birds?

Split up equally We have always divided the birds up evenly. After all, pheasant hunting is a group effort. Without a blocker and a pusher, nobody would get many birds. The guy down in the thick stuff who can't even shoot deserves as many birds as the guy blocking with the easy shots. Also...

    Opening Day

Great Pics Now I'm really getting excited after seeing the pics. Two weeks before we head out to our yearly hunt north of Mitchell, SD. I think even my dog knows that it is getting close to time to go.
