    With a heavy heart.........

Hi All, My name is JR and Jim was my step Dad. The memorial service was today and went as well as expected. Some of his local hunting friends gathered after the service and released pheasants into the habitat that he loved so much. Perhaps I can get a couple photos to BeirlSetters and he could...

Who is doing some spring habitat work?

WET here to It has been quite a year here with late snow over heavy rain and now rain it seems every other day. Can't get some of my equipment out of the storage shed as you get stuck as soon as you come out the door. Got a new tractor last week (Massy Ferguson 1740M with loader and backhoe )...

    Winter and Bird Survival

Not good in South Central SD either----- I had between 45 and 55 birds feeding mornings and evenings in the bean field right up to the storm and now I've seen two roosters in 3 days. We had 2.30 inches of rain over the first two days an then 4 inches wind driven snow and now most areas have new...

    New habitat

I try--some times it seems to much--but not really as it brings me so much pleasure. I have had my eye on this pasture for years but it's hard to give up $6000 a year in rent--- still it will be a great for the wildlife

    New habitat

Have had partridge in very limited numbers ----but sadly have not seen any in 5 yrs or so. Last one I saw in South Dakota was on the Grand River National Grasslands west of Bison. :(

    New habitat

I am not a farmer but I've got a little better at it and now it is grazing and how to manage grasslands. Fire is not really an option due to the local near by airport and it is adjacent to a very busy highway. There are lots of questions and I hope that I can work it out as the potential for...

    New habitat

Our renter has informed us that they no longer wish to rent the pasture and our decision is to just not rent it to anyone. This will add 103 acres to habitat on the farm. The acres are next to a 2 yr old 75 acre CRP plot. It has never been plowed. Buffalo wallows are still apparent and is...

    End of Season Thoughts

Just some simple numbers for this season. I have over 200 acres of CRP scattered over 15 plots of various types. Had 32 hunters from 7 states and they ranged from young to some of us OLD timers. With little experience hunting pheasants to those who should have it figured out. It was a very...

    Permission to hunt

Rich South Dakota farmers I am really put off over your statement that SD farmers are better off because they " make money " off pheasant hunting. Yes turning a farm into a pay to play operation can work----big investment and MAYBE a big return. I work on improving habitat so there will be...

    Habitat Project 2016

They say "build it and they will come"--it is true---had 6 sharp tail grouse fly in and land in my 30 acre weed patch behind the house this afternoon---a first for them---Oh yea my English Setter was with me on the deck and went totally nuts.

    A Dakotas Poem

Its winter in Dakotas And the gentle breezes blow Seventy miles an hour, At thirty Five below. Oh how I love Dakotas When the snows up to your butt You take a breath of winter air And your nose gets frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful So I guess I'll hang around. I could never...
