December 2024 Hunt (Somewhat Long Post)

The battery life to capture the entire hunt sounds awesome. Only suggestion I would have is I would stop the record after every retrieve, and immediately restart it as you resume the push. That way when you're going thru hours of footage after the hunt, you know right where to go (toward the...

    Let's talk cattail strategies

Although not mentioned as an option,I prefer having 2 hunters, along with some well frozen water and a couple good dogs. And then personally, I don't step foot in the cat-tails, just walk along the edge and let the dogs work. I had a lab, RIP, that was a cat-tail machine! She would head in...

So you want to hunt public land in South Dakota?

The video was inciteful to me. My philosophy on public has been a little different. I like to get out first thing (10am in SD) as it's the only time that you know for sure that the piece of ground hasn't already been hunted that day. And I like to start on a bigger piece of ground that will...

    Indian reservations

Had a nearly identical encounter at Lower Brule. 6 of us were gearing up ready to hit a field when a guy in an old beat up compact pickup comes screeching up spitting gravel everywhere and jumps out cursing us, threatening us, and telling us that we couldn't hunt there. "I don't give a f*** "...

gearing up for 10 day solo road trip

Couldn't be more jealous of that trip plan (and lack of committed times/places)! Pretty much my favorite time of year to hunt SD, and over the years have encountered the entire spectrum of weather from 75-80 degrees and really hot for the dogs, to high 20's with freezing rain/roads and...

    SD Pheasant Hunting Videos

Just a suggestion to make editing a little easier. I like to stop and restart the camera after every shot (usually when my dog in handing over the bird). That way, when you go to edit, you don't have to weed thru many minutes of footage to find what you're looking for. It will be right there...

Opinions on January 2021 SD scouting hunt

I think the birds are pretty safe from hunters (certainly from me) at 25 below and 35mph winds.

    Couple videos from this weekend

Mark, Always enjoy the videos! Where was Olive? Not an air-boater? :) Hey, curious as to how you like your flock-a-flickers? Bought a 1/2 dozen and have been out once this year on teal, and haven't decided if they make a difference or not. Would love yours, or any other opinions.

    dove reports

Was in Nebraska just above the KS border (south of McCook) and had a similar experience. Still got into them pretty good on Saturday, but, the abundance of water didn't consolidate them like it had in the past. The drizzling rain screwed up the shooting the rest of the weekend. Still lots of...

    Dog Box

I have an old Dee Zee 2 dog box passed down by my dad and love it! the top is flush with the pickup bed rails and fits great under the tonneau cover when the weather's cold.

    Looking for pigeons

If you haven't already try Craigslist. That's where I've always had luck here in Colorado.

    Youth Shotgun Question

Certainly on the more expensive side, but, I bought my 10 year old a 16 gauge Browning Citori super featherweight over/under with a 26 inch barrel. Very light at 5.75 pounds, and with some of the lighter 16 gauge loads, it doesn't kick too bad. He's now 13 and it's his go-to gun for upland and...

First time pheasant hunting in Kansas

As mentioned by many, I'd recommend going to SD if coming all the way from MA. I have a 4-5 hour drive to where I hunt in KS, and 8-10 to where I hunt in SD. I hunt KS often because of the shorter drive, but, there's no question where I'd be going if they were anywhere near the same.
