Have you considered and enclosed trailer? One of the guys I hunt with has a smaller one and it really alleviates a lot of storage issues. Not sure if you could find one to rent instead of driving a separate vehicle?

There are a lot of acres in the areas mentioned that should not be farmed or grazed and just left in prairie/grassland areas. Some of the things I have seen in production is scary!

Some of these guys are still operating on some old money, and can take a hit too. Do a bit of farming myself so I understand, but just a dumb cowboy and plowboy at the end of the day that likes to shoot a few birds now and then.

The big boys may just figure they need more acres to make more if the ROI is low on the acres they have, I hope not, but that may be the mentality as there I am believe there are even fewer farmers now than in the 80's and they are covering more acres.
