How deer management in Kansas has effected upland hunters

I believe the owner can pull the land out any time, but has to pay back the money. The state likes to pre-pay to prevent that. Also, they like to pre-pay on 5-10yr leases. A lot of farmers get locked into the program because they don’t have the money to pay back all the years worth of money...

How deer management in Kansas has effected upland hunters

If I have one thing against deer leases, it’s that it has made access to upland hunting almost impossible. My experiences the past 2-3 seasons are strictly based from I-135 west to highway 281 from Ok to Ne lines. I have seen a few things. 1) the land that is groomed for deer holds good bird...

Farthest east You've shot a Kansas rooster

Hunted Benedictine Bottoms last 2 years. Bagged a couple roosters last year. No roosters seen this year, just quail. Some of the toughest walking we have done. We used to have access to private crp near Atchinson before it went back to corn/beans. It was quite the honey hole for pheasants...

    Guide/Outfitter Recommendations

Besides owning Upland Inn Hunts, Jason also owns the Surrogator company. While I have not hunted there, I have talked to him several times, and he assured me there are no pen raised birds released on his properties. All birds are surrogated as chicks in the off season. No controlled shooting...

    Dog Box

Tell me about it. Sam’s in Wichita had 5-6 of those deezee boxes around 1999 for $279. Stupidly, I only bought 1 and not all of them. Sold it when I got an 2008 Ram as it would not fit in the short bed.

    Dog Box

Quality dog boxes in El Dorado is good to go. Clint has made 4 different boxes for me over the years and his craftsmanship is awesome. He has made some tweaks to his process over the years for the better like making the doors out of thicker gauge aluminum than the rest of box and not cutting...

Entry Level Gun For The Wife

I came across a CZ Redhead deluxe 20ga O/U Youth model at a steal of a price. Brand new, but a display shelf model. New it has a 13" LOP and 24" barrel. I slipped on an aftermarket 3/4" recoil pad and it is about perfect for small frame shooters.

    NE KS Report

Looks like everyone that bird hunts ks has read this thread. Just talked to my buddy that lives near Marysville, and he said he has seen a ton of bird hunters the last week or so. Even in rifle season. More hunters than he has seen in last several years combined.

    Lack of milo

So in the absence of milo, will corn stubble provide a decent source of food for birds? The crp I found the quail in had plenty of rag weed in it, so I know the quail had food regardless of the adjacent corn stubble.

    Lack of milo

Maybe there is more milo further west, but I spent all morning scouting/hunting NE between Seneca and Horton, and did not see 1 field of milo stubble. Glad to hear there is still some out there.

    Lack of milo

Last couple years seeing less and less milo stubble around. One thing for sure, the places we have seen milo adjacent to crp, we have found birds. With very little milo stubble around, are you guys finding corn stubble a good substitute for milo? I found a nice covey this morning in the...

    road conditions

The gravel maintained roads near marysville were decent. The non-maintained dirt roads were impassible today. Luckily, we had gravel roads to the edge of our property. Parked at one corner and started walking. Pretty sloppy out, but put up 2 coveys along the road sunning this morning.
