Hunted McElvie Monday- Wednesday this week. Birds are scattered, and jumpy! Lots of rose hips, crickets, and some grasshoppers, so the food is there. Our group of four totaled 12 birds for the trip- I was running a young dog, first time on the prairies, but he did pretty well.

Rem, The biggest problem with Iowa public land...is there isn't very much of it! Iowa ranks 49th (out of 50 states...!!) in the percentage of land which is public- 1.04%- roughly 370,000 acres- much of that is NW Refuge and Corp of Engineers land along both the Mississippi and Missouri...

I'm a wild bird hunter...but have worked at several preserves, and late last season had a buddy who hadn't shot a "wild" bird in several seasons. I took him to a preserve; it was late season, cover pretty sparse...the manager suggested using "hobbles". They worked great for my pointer...birds...

VB County..... Depends on where in Van Buren county you're looking---- in the first ten miles east of the jct of highways 1 and 16----- 12 (TWELVE!!) instances of tiling, waterway removal, fencerow piling, logging of ditches (getting them ready for the dozer!), and "general" cleanup of fallow...

My fear is that Central/Eastern South Dakota will look much like Iowa in a couple of years.....a lush, verdant green in the summer....and a bleak, desolate landscape in winter. The birds are year 'round residents...and they just can't make it through the winter without some cover!!!

Just not much to say....any reports" of "no pheasants seen" would just bring further depression....and just about any other topic from Iowa would just be "b****in' and moaning"!!!! I'm spending my time researching and planning for hunts in other states...I'm a lifelong Iowa resident bird...

seizures... My oldest shorthair started having pretty frequent seizures about three years ago- I could always tell when, because the other dogs in the kennel just went nuts when it happened! Did all the tests...no cause found...but they continued, and the vet suggested potassium bromide...

Neighbors.... I live in Keosauqua- Van Buren county is beautiful...but the birds are very scarce! Of course, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a deer or two! Drive carefully- just traveled from Houston, through Arkansas, and then Missouri...didn't see a road kill deer until I hit...
