You argued my semantics but agreed with my point.;)...at least I agree with yours. You don't want a dog just running free with no control whatsoever.

I think you have this backwards. It is pretty important that your dog obeys above anything else. It is dangerous for a dog to not respond to a recall. A young pup doesn't always know potential danger when it sees it. Unless you hunt in a fenced in area with no cliffs, predators, flowing water...

The guy should not be hunting with a dog he can't control. There are all sorts of things that could go wrong. If he was both 200 yards away and yelling at his dog....it is your bird to shoot. Its one thing if he yelled to you something like "hey hold up while I get over there" that's another...

    Hunting around St.Paul

"Husker Hunts" is a lodge near Ord. 30-45 min drive from St. Paul. I grew up in Ord and hunted all over the area. Most farmers are very friendly to hunters if you aren't afraid to knock on some doors. The numbers are down so a lodge may be the way to go if you want guaranteed birds :(.

    Shell Brand

I use federal prairie storm steel. Many public areas are going steel shot only for all game not just waterfowl. I also prefer the environmentally friendly approach and it kills the birds just as dead...trust me. I would say federal is most popular overall.

cockleburs + ESS = bad combo

Ya, if its in a spot that you can't wrap then the cone is probably the only option.

cockleburs + ESS = bad combo

You can put some neosporin on her. That will help it heal faster and some types have pain/itch relieving stuff in it. Don't over do it...doesn't take much. Try to keep her from licking it. I had a similar situation one of my dogs and I put neosporin on and wrapped with ace bandage so he wouldn't...

    Looking for an english springer

I picked her up Saturday. The breeder was great. He loaded up 3 young ones and an adult to show me how they hunt. We took them out one by one(each worked alongside the adult) and they retrieved some live birds and proved that they certainly were not the least bit gun shy. After the "test drive"...

18 week old springers first hunt

Depends on ones definition of "fully huntable". Some would say flush live bird/retrieve dead bird is all that is required. Myself I would say hunting over a dog that young is irresponsible. To each his own. Be careful and good luck.

    Looking for an english springer

Thanks for the response guys. There are a couple local breeders but neither have any available any time soon. I checked out the Minnesota french spaniel website and they do seem very similar to springers. How are they with ducks? I do a fair amount of duck hunting as well. The springer I had...

    Cz 912

I love my 912. Its a special edition with a silver receiver(not the tom knapp version). It's one of the most comfortable semi-autos I have ever shot(I have shot most of them out there) and it's priced so low I don't have to baby it. I have used it for ducks, geese, pheasants, and a turkey...all...

    Looking for an english springer

Looking for an English Springer Spaniel. I'd prefer a liver and white male(my dad had one when I was a child) but black and white or female is not out of the question. If you have pups available or if you have a litter planned that I could get in on, please let me know. I am willing to travel...
