    What Gauge to Buy?

Since you have a 12 I'd get a 20 to go along with it. That's actually what I'm looking at doing before next season. If lead was legal everywhere there would be no question that a 20 is fine for pheasants...especially if you hunt over a pointer or really close working flushed. Tim

double? or 2 in a row?

An honest man. :D It doesn't matter for me. I swear the only times I've had two roosters flush together is when I already have 2 birds in my vest. I would say that a true double should have the second bird in the air before the first shot. Otherwise its a double on report. Either way I'd brag...

    Prevously-shot birds?

I've shot a few over the years that were clearly shot before. Some fully healed and others fairly fresh. I've seen a couple with shot tracks full of puss and feathers through the breast, those are usually ugly wounds. My dog pointed then caught a cripple that was green under the skin, no way I...

Semi Auto lube in cold temps

I've been trying a different lube this year. In years past I have used rem oil and the like and below 25 I could tell it was slowing down the gun. I'm using a lanolin based lube called Berkebile PFC this season. So far I've been very happy with it. It is mostly wiped off so there is little there...

    Upcoming cold weather

There is no problem with you hunting it is just that you should do it smart. If you bust a bunch of birds out of cover 10 minutes before sunset it's hard on them. Hunting from 10 until 4 is not nearly the issue. I will say though that it will be miserable. It is a little different for locals...

    Upcoming cold weather

 That's a good thought. If someone is determined to hunt them in that kind of weather it is best to stop about an hour before sunset. That gives birds time to find a good roost for the night. Tim

    Upcoming cold weather

If it's windy it will be close to unhuntable next week. Highs in the single digits and any wind and snow will make it miserable...and it is almost always windy in SD. Maybe the birds will be stacked in small areas that you can hit quickly but it will be an all or nothing type of hunt. I hope to...

    better then? or worse then?

I vote 'the same'. I may shoot a few more birds this year but that has more to do with better shooting and my dog being in his 3rd season. I shot a limit last weekend on public when I wasn't even really trying to. I was hoping others would get the shots but they just happened to be near me...

    More Birds Than Last Year

I have lost 2 birds out of around 30 that I have hit this year. I feel bad about those. Both hit running next to standing corn and I wouldn't let my dog go in after them. 50% is a horrible loss rate no matter how you want to paint it. Yep some are always going to be lost and I understand that...

    Imaginary bird

Its good to hear that you had a nice hunt. It is strange how some times you run into more roosters then hens. I know that on Saturday even though we shot some roosters it made up for some of those rooster only days. There have been some weeks this year when I'm sure I saw 70% roosters. The...

    More Birds Than Last Year

+1  That is terrible. Tim

    Struggling

It could be that the area just doesn't have many pheasants. If an area had heavy snow last winter and a wet spring that wasn't conducive to nesting then it can take a few years to come back, even if it is just a few square miles that had these conditions. There was an area that I hunted many...

Snow sounds great until it happens...

While it's not as bad as the first snow last year it isn't far behind. I got my limit in around an hour this afternoon (I was not alone so the reason for 4 birds) but I must say it is not as much fun to me as last week walking through grass. I can't be the only one who dreams of easy to walk...

    Struggling

First, are you hunting with or without a dog? Were there any bad summer storms in the area that might have killed birds so that there aren't many to begin with? Did you get any snow in your part of IA? If not this is my favorite part of the season. I feel most people hunt too heavy of cover in...

    Come on, SNOW!!!

BeirlSetters, Good to see that you made it out and got a couple. No travel at all recommended in my county today and that seemed prudent. I'm glad I got out yesterday and shot one last pre-snow bird right before sunset. I think we got around 7 inches here but by late in the day it was clear...
