Ruffed grouse vs sharp tail grouse

Once you flush a few sharpies you will be able to recognize them pretty easy, like it was said they have a pointed tail and are in the open.

New guy with a good dog needs help training

Hey Jd welcome to bird hunting, biggest thing with a lab is to keep them in close 20yards and get them into birds. Because they are a flushing dog if they get out farther you will need to be extremely lucky to get a shot. The more birds you can get them into the better, a lot is in the dogs...

    December Pheasant Hunt?

State land birds are hard to find and lots of pressure. If your up to lots of walking you can find an opportunity, if your lucky. Check out the HAP lands sometimes they don't get hit as hard.

    Grouse Hunting - Lower UP

As far as the $150 for out of state license, that is pretty steep for the population of grouse in this state. However if you have the time and can afford it, it's always fun to get out.

    Grouse Hunting - Lower UP

Always good to get out, that time of year the birds normally are bunched up together in broods. Thick cover but you can get closer to the birds, and bonus of local woodcock. Manistee, Cadillac all nice areas, find some creek bottoms and thick elder with edges, maybe some raspberries in the area...

December pheasant hunting should not be allowed.

Oak clear cuts Marshrat, Sounds like you know your stuff, I have a question for you being that you are very educated with Michigan and it's wildlife. I have been noticing a lot of oaks being clear cut in northern lower,100 to 300 acre parcels. Are we not cutting a great food source for both...

    First Timer

You did nothing wrong, I've hunted the last 2 weekends for grouse and have been very disappointed and not had a shot yet. As far as woodcock, missed one flushed 4 or 5. We had a very wet spring and I'm thinking that was hard on the birds.

    Report All Sightings

Michigan pheasant sightings, almost as rare as bigfoot sightings. Yes there are some birds, but I see more bald eagles than pheasants. Last winter I saw maybe 6 birds in the thumb, and I put on a lot of miles. Sad but true. I put my time in for grouse and go west for pheasants.

Good luck to you, I hope you find birds. Wood cock are normally fairly abundant along the elder bottoms, grouse are spotty. If the weather is cooler that will help both the dogs and the birds looking for feed. Remember look for food sources by edges, acorns, thorn apples, or any berries. If you...

I agree the UP would be the best but for a long weekend it's a lot of miles. North of Grayling and or Cadillac has lot's of public land to hunt. As far as wolves in the Upper they are out of control, however bird dogs stay closer to hunters and should be fairly safe compared to hounds that go...
