how many days did you spend afield

13 days all in Kansas...not counting my drive time.

    Practice

I might shoot one round of skeet during the off season but that is the extent of it. I spend most of my time fishing or with the family, with a little golf on the side. I made a commitment to my wife that outside of hunting season my family takes priority over everything. That seems to make...

    Thoughts on this past season

In all honesty I thought that the bird numbers were better this year than any other. I hunt around four different areas in Western Kansas and while not every area was the "best that it has been", overall there were a ton of birds out there. It was by far my most successful season as far as...

    Crop contents

I have found on multiple occasions the seed and the sprouts. I always find much more corn and milo but several times the green wheat has shown up. I even found a bunch of soybeans in a few birds in NW Kansas this year.

Withdrawal symptoms and 50+ years of doggin'

I am always in a steady state of missing bird hunting. The only thing that helped me bid a positive farewell to this year was that the last day I hunted this year I saw the temps rise into the 70s. Hands down for me it was the driest and worst scenting conditions I have ever experienced over...

    Purple

This is one of those times I think that being from Iowa gives me the advantage when asking to hunt. I often here the response, "where are you from, Iowa? well heck ya you can hunt you guys suck at everything". I am more a Jayhawk fan than Kansas State for the simple fact that Roy Williams...

    Crop contents

It is my understanding that pheasants will often turn to green wheat during times of extreme drought or as a supplemental water source. Throughout each hunting season we will find a pheasant or two full of green wheat.

Last Weekend of the Season. Who's Hunting?

My brother and I started out today for our last 2 and a half day of this season. We didn't see a rooster until 10:30 but had our two man limit by 1:30. Scenting conditions were tough with plus 50 degress and big wind. My brother was the rudy magnet today with multiple bird flushes and some...

    Mountain Lions?

Buck--My dad has been working on his shot for the last three years down in Kansas. Two years ago he finished off a bird that I winged...imagine me winging something. Last year he got tired in the middle of a section and said he was walking back to the truck. He no more turned around to head...

Ness City Area - Leased Land

I just gained permission to hunt a half section of grass today in Ness County and I found the landowner very friendly as we talked for about 30 minutes. He even had a group coming in this weekend to hunt but since it is just my brother and I hunting he said to have at it. Now he didn't give me...

Last Weekend of the Season. Who's Hunting?

I will be there Thursday through Saturday for my final trip of the season. It has been right at a month since I was last in Kansas and I am very much looking forward to it.

    Mountain Lions?

Last year we were hunting a WIHA in Gove county with an a fairly large patch of head high weeds. My dad can't walk as much as the rest of us so he was setting up watch on the exterior of the weed patch. He swears that he saw a very large cat with an obvious tail run out of the weeds behind...

How did you find your best KS hunting spots?

First trip to Kansas... I love telling this story and a few of my hunting buddies have heard it 10s of times. I met my wife in the late winter of 98 and one of the first things I told her after two weeks of dating her was that I was going to marry her. The second thing I told her was that I...

    Bad Apples abound!

I always hate the "get rid of all non-resident hunters" rant. I can tell you that in my home state of Iowa the biggest poachers are resident hunters. I would venture to say that the same is true in Kansas. I have seen beer cans thrown out of windows of vehicles with Kansas plates...I have...

    Dog friendly lodging near Beeler?

To my recollection there is no available commercial lodging between Dighton and Ness City. I believe Dighton is closest to Beeler and seems like a very nice place.
