    Upland Forecast

That makes sense and that's probably the way they've always done it. They sure didn't make it easy to find that brood survey this year though... and probably for a reason. Thanks for the info.

    Upland Forecast

Has Kansas always left out the actual count (number) statistics in their forecasts? Or has it gotten so bad that they decided to take that out to provide a glimmer of hope?

    It Looks Grim

The primary gripe on this thread is that landowners should not get paid for WIHA land when the habitat is terrible or considerably altered for the worse between signing the contract and hunting season. If they are going to be paid to lease their land, there should be stipulations that require...

    Oklahoma pheasants

There may be pockets of solid pheasant numbers in the panhandle this year, but from my experience, north central Oklahoma has stronger numbers this season. However, public land opportunities are very limited in that part of the state. Either region provides a decent chance at a mixed...

    Young birds

Killed two birds in NW OK opening weekend that were so young they hadn't even developed head color yet. Got out of that covey quick.

    Woodward county quail

Quail numbers are down considerably from 14-16 but there are still a few decent pockets. You'll want to look for a lot of the same things you look for in Kansas and Texas to find birds... edges of crop fields/weed patches, brushy fencerows and draws, etc.

Small grains for quail in corn/bean country.....where to start

Prairie Drifter always has the best habitat advice. I will never disagree with what he writes. But I will add some advice to all of his. I think all of his suggestions are the most important considerations for nesting and brood-rearing in the summer and important for food sources in the...

    Raise out of state fees!!

I'm assuming one reason for increased hunting pressure, specifically on bobwhites, this season is the lower populations in Texas and much of Oklahoma. A lot of Texas quail hunters either gave up their lease or weren't allowed to quail hunt on their leases this year... little public land there...

    Late Hatch?

I have experienced similar results in OK this season. Most coveys have very young birds... I moved a couple on opening weekend that had birds who hadn't even developed their head colors yet. Got out of those quick. I've heard similar reports from KS. We move small birds on occasion in OK but...

    2016-2017

Hit the same spots my group and I do almost every season on opening weekend. Found decent numbers of birds but nothing like the reports were leading us to believe. Scenting conditions were tough, but still can say with confidence that bird numbers were down compared to last year... at least at...

    Anybody hunting?

Hunted public land yesterday with 4 guys and only 1 dog... Moved 7 coveys and bagged 11... Scenting conditions got worse as the day went on... Has got pretty dry

    Bird Hunting, Hunter Orange Law

I always wear orange vest and typically orange hat also no matter what else is in season. The law saying that deer gun season is over doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of road hunters out there looking for an out of season kill.

    Any Thoughts?

I think it will also benefit those wishing to introduce youth or friends to hunting/fishing... should be more and hopefully good opportunities closer to home. I've read that they are going to target species like pheasant and antelope that you don't have many, if any, opportunities to hunt on...

    THE Place

Kaw was outstanding last season but I think the floods really hurt them this summer. I really struggled on my one trip up there this year.

    2015-2016

Had a great hunt on private land in west OK this weekend... Best dog work of the year. Should've had more on the tailgate. Moved 10 big coveys on just 240 acres.
