Need an opinion: strap game carrier or vest in the winter?

One of my hunting buddy's uses a strap-type vest and loves it; then again, he shoots a lot of trap and wears a similar device at the range...so it may be more of "this is what I'm used to" than any real benefit. Still, if you're having trouble getting your gun to shoulder correctly, I would...

    Help with wild bird shooting

Gosh, I hope so, lol... I was being totally facetious; I always feel like roosters I've missed fly away giving me "the finger", so I thought I'd toss that our there just for fun:D

    Help with wild bird shooting

Feet. If the feet are tucked up tight to the body, it's a hen, don't shoot it. If one or both feet are lowered from the body, with the feet balled up except for one toe extended straight out, that's a rooster. SHOOT!!:D

Should I buy hip boots for my December trip this year?

HA!! I would probably turn them inside out for the hunt, might also make it easier to get back into them for the return...assuming I have to get out the same way I got in. But the garbage bag idea is a great idea too. Reviews have been pretty spotty; seems you either get a pair that doesn't...

Should I buy hip boots for my December trip this year?

I heard about these "reusable waders" from Hodgman on a PF podcast. They're NOT something you're going to wear all day, but might be something a guy could use in a pinch and in a hurry. For $20, I'm going to try them. There's a couple places I hunt where these might come in useful...

    Water Freezing???

I'd bring rubber boots, hip boots, and field boots just to be safe. I spoke to my farmer last night, He is saying the same thing as everyone else: water water everywhere. Expect it to be wet, be cautious around sloughs, and good luck!

Glad to hear the dog and owner are reunited; that story just sucks all the way around.

question on hens and cackles and roosters too

I clearly recall watching that bird thinking "that's a rooster"; but there I stood with my gun at port arms. Ah well. He'll never live it down, and we'll never trust him again

question on hens and cackles and roosters too

Agree with A5 Sweet 16; I can't recall ever hearing a hen cackle, but lots of roosters roll on out without a sound besides wingbeats. There's certainly someting to be said for close flushes, where a rooster cackles; I, however, believe the rooster that cackles on his way out is giving me the...

    Pheasant Travel Distance

Yup; I've definitely watched pheasants fly off into the horizon after flush until I couldn't see them anymore. Easily more than a mile. And have watched them pile into a slough in the evening a few years ago; closest food was probably just under a mile away.

    Pheasant Travel Distance

Excellent question. I don't know the answer, but my simple brain says they will "migrate" some distance to find the Holy Trinity: food, water, shelter, not necessarily in that order. And once they find it, they migrate no more. How far? I've read one article say over 5 miles. Will they...

    boot dryer

I've got the Cabela's "deluxe" boot dryer that has a couple short tubes for gloves. Works great, I usually wear Cabela's Whitetail Extreme boots in the snow and mud, it will dry them out overnight just fine. EDIT: I just looked at the Cabela's website, they no longer carry the dryer I have...

    A fresh report

I guess if I have any apprehension of the upcoming season, it is that there will be lots more cover which could spread birds out, moreso late season. Early season always has to contend with unharvested crops, etc, but by the time Dec rolls around most crops are out. This year, the birds will...

Meet Zep...a bad to good rescue story.

You have it right; I was working Saudi in June when my phone was blowing up between my wife and a friend of hers; next weekend, we have a new Lab. Dumped in the countryside near us, he's a very big boy maybe a year old who likely grew up too big, has no OB, but with us, in 7 weeks of "puppy...
