Trip to NW Iowa

We were back there this past weekend and saw lots of birds still, but they were spooky! You will have to be stealthy to get close. Some bad weather/snow will help your odds. We had a couple of 10"-12" snow falls the past couple of weeks, but now it warmed back up to unseasonable temperatures and...

    Trip to NW Iowa

That was on Saturday when it was wet and drizzling. Sunday, it warmed up and was too nice. The birds just get up and head out to the open harvested corn fields for the day and you don't see them until it's time to roost in the evening. If it's cold and windy, the birds will stay on roost a...

    Trip to NW Iowa

Hi, I just hunted Dickinson county on opening day with three other guys. We saw birds every place that we went. There are plenty of birds there. All the public areas are well marked and there are over 20k acres of public land around there. Just look for typical cover that you would hunt...

    Season Closing Hunt . . .

I got out the last day as well. [/IMG] It was tough going with the snow, but I had a nice piece of public land all to myself the last day! Thanks to my 5700 lb. Tahoe, I was able to bust some drifts that evidently, other people weren't willing to try, to get to my spot.

    Spirit Lake area question

That area gets TONS of pressure. Once the duck season closes, Jemmerson Slough will open to hunting, then THAT place will get TONS of pressure. I have hunted the opener there for years, but the past couple have just been nuts. I am going to wait next year until at least the third weekend before...

    Spirit Lake area question

If I hadn't spent the past two weekends in a row there, I would come and show you some good spots to hunt. Unfortunately, I would seriously be in the dog house if I went a third weekend in a row. My best suggestion for you, is to go north on hwy. 86 from the Northland Inn. There is lots of...

    Spirit Lake area question

There are over 20,000 acres around the Spirit Lake area. Just talk to the owner of the Northland Inn. He will point you to plenty of places to keep you busy. I would suggest food plots and working the edges of cattails. I have been seeing plenty of birds in these areas.

    Photo of the Year Contest!

He was a big boy. 102 lbs. THE best dog I ever hunted over. His name was Max and I had to have him put down five years ago. He was equally skilled at upland and waterfowl hunting. Multiple blind retrieves were no problem and he would follow a wounded bird to the end of the earth. Rarely lost...

    Guns and Dogs

Zeb, keep on hunting! Once you quit, it will be hard to go back. I plan on hunting up until I keel over. I am a "Bakers" dozen years younger than you, but time still seems to be catching up with me. I feel the aches and pains a lot more than I used to. It seems just like a couple of years ago...

    New to this site

Hello everyone! My name is Boyd and I am from N.W. Iowa. I hunt mostly public land with my 5 1/2 year old female Lab Missy. (I didn't name her) My 13 1/2 year old Lab, Duke is retired now. He will still get out for a few hours this season, but it's time for him to stay on the porch. Missy and I...

    Bird Knife

Yes, this is just a hobby. I have been making knives for around 20 years. I sell a few now and then, but mostly make them to give to friends and relatives.

    Bird Knife

Here's a small bird knife I made to hopefully use this weekend! It's L-6 steel with a Buffalo horn handle and Elk antler bolster.[/IMG]
