    public land birds

    Nice picture and congrats on the quail and hog! Not every day you get to bring home the bacon. I never made it to LB. Kids got sick and stayed home to help out the Mrs. I'll start focusing on the quail now that pheasant is over. I am headed to the foothills next week to chase quail, hope I...

    public land birds

    I was able to scrape a rooster at Sacramento NWR yesterday. I had to walk 5 hours, and in that time I saw 3 roosters (got one, hit one that escaped, and watched one run up the check and escape into the closed zone) and saw 4 hens. Also saw about a dozen deer and a coyote. The rooster I got...

    California

    Thanks for the info. I checked the map and thought I'd try parking lot 11. Looks like Northeast of lot 11 is the place to go, all I have to go on is Google Earth. I am headed out rain or shine.

    WD-40 and Guns

    I am hitting the carbs in preparation for a pheasant hunt this week. Red Tail Ale a key part of my mental and physical preparation- and supports a local brewery.

    Sorry about that. Folks sure are friendly to newbies on this thread.

    California

    I think that dog is actually smiling! I am from San Joaquin county, and thanks for the warm welcome. I agree the quail hunting in California is second to none. I chase quail as well and do very well on CA quail and every once in awhile some mountain quail. I just wish there were a few more...

    What are you using for nontox this year?

    I'm using Hevi-Metal #2 for pheasant and love it. I like to use the same ammo since I hunt ducks and pheasant on the same day so that is why I am using such large shot.

    WD-40 and Guns

    You specified outside use only. I have used WD-40 as the final wipedown for the outside of all of my guns for years, and my Dad did the same with some of these same guns for decades before they came to me. I don't think it hurts them at all. I have heard that the WD-40 will break down the...

    16 ga

    I have a 16 gauge Remington 870 Wingmaster and love it. Ammo is fairly easy to find, even the local Walmart carries it most of the time, though only in a few shot sizes. I'd stick with the 16.

    California

    Here's another CA pheasant hunter.....I have a decent dog, shoot OK, and have plenty of time to hunt. The only thing missing are pheasants to shoot at in this state! So far this season I have dropped a nice one, missed another, and jumped 5 hens or so. Last season got 3 wild birds and 7 the...

    DFG changes hunt days

    I cant believe that DFG changed the hunt days so soon before the season. It doesnt take too many people to man the refuges and I bet the days they canceled would have paid for themselves wiith the area day passes they sell. With so few pheasants around, the DFG refuges are one of the only...
