Anybody have any good plans for a dog box?

I have 3 dogs and I am looking to build a box out of plywood to fit in the back of my Tahoe. I would like to have a drawer, probably. Unless it adds too much weight.

Any good ideas or plans?

Thanks.

Need a little more info. First, what kind and size of dogs are we talking about? Secondly, do you want to have 3 separate compartments for each dog?

Trying to make 3 separate kennels in the back of a Tahoe would be pretty tough. I have an Expedition and two intermediate size plastic kennels about fills it up. I have about 4' side to side in the back.

Somewhere on this site some one had a thread showing how they built a platform with drawers in the bottom and the kennels sat on top. I believe they built if for a Tahoe. I just can't find the thrread right now.

I'm sure some other will help out here. I know that when I take my two Brittanys and another dogs in my Expedition I have to crate both Britts in one kennel.

I have a 33 and a 39 pound springer and a red setter pup that should be 46-48 pounds. I would like to get 3 seperate compartments if possible.

I did see that thread, I believe, but it was for the back of a pickup. Unless you saw a different one than I am thinking of. I tried to search the forums and didn't come up with anything.

I just don't think you are going to get three compartments in the back of a Tahoe. I'm assuming your Tahoe's cargo area is about the same size as my Expedition, 48" side to side. That's 16" per compartment less dividers. Of course that's configuring them side by side. Maybe some other layout with the back seat down would work.

I guess that would be narrower then a 200 serries crate. Fine for a pup. But cramped for the others. In my ranger I put my new Crow River 3 hole in side ways. It is 63" long and I let them out through the side topper door down the hall so to speak, out the back. Drawers under, and even a 10 gal. water tank. Works well. Maybe you could do something like that. Or two crates in back and one out the side door, with drawers under out the back. I just got mine done here, I will have to post a pic or 2.

The kennel aires that my dogs sleep in at night measure 24 1/2 x 15 1/2 so I would think that would be enough room for them to have 3 16 inch wide compartments.

Boy Jeff, kennels that size are awfully small for the dogs you have. Especially when your Red Setter pup gets full grown. My Britts are about the same size as your Springers and I wouldn't put them in that small of space. Maybe if it was just for a day or a few hours while in the field but certainly not to be sleeping in. I'm sure if you check the recommended size kennel for your dogs it would be larger than what you have.

You might be better off buying one giant size wire crate to put in the back of your Tahoe and put all the dogs together. Just an idea. I'll be curious to see what others on this site think about minimum kennel size.

Thats only 15.5" wide? my 200 is wider then that. But no she look ready to go. If you can fit 3 of them with drawers under, go for it. As long as they have that room, what the heck. But one bigger dog maybe the two in back and one out a side like I said. I do that in the wagon for training and it works well.

pointer there is nothing wrong with my boxes and its better than having them in the back so you can smell them

especially after they have found a carcass and had a good rub down in it or a skunk no thanks in the back of the truck they go

what i meant i was joking about the smell gove you know me better than that damn i hunt out of a armani suit lol i knew you had built a few to haul on the outside like it should be done or in the back of a truck.

I knew that I just wanted to see if I could rile you up a little they do belong in the back of a truck

Jeff, this thread has kind of gotten off course. I just wanted to ask that you post some pictures of whatever you come up with for your kennels. Might help someone else out wanting to do something similar. Good luck.

as soon as I get my idea done I will also post some pics on here all I have are pics of the frame no skin on it yet

Dakotazeb-

I will do that. I am making some plans right now and will probably build it in the next week or so, after I look at some boxes at game fair and get some ideas/measurements. I will post pics when its done.

Jeff I put the roll on truck bed liner on my ply wood box, all four sides, I sqweedgeed it on thick two layers. A aluminum drip edge on the top over the drawers, with foam rubber seals on the drawer faces. and it can pour out and everything stays dry. Works well to hose it all off as well. I have seen many people use carpet but it gets nasty after awhile.

Finally got those pics taken. I still have to put dividers in the drawers for shells etc. just been to busy to finish it. But got it far enough to use it. The water tank comes in handy for allot more then I thought. Especialy when it is as hot as it is now.
