First pheasant with my RRL 28 gauge…

Local farmer friend wanted to take a walk this afternoon…took my RRL 28, M/M tubes…1 oz #5 lead, 1220 fps…just took the old dog to give her some exercise…early on in the switchgrass, 2 hens flushed out of range heading NE…didn’t know where Lena was, then I saw her coming towards me, and a rooster flushes heading SW, a crosser that seemed on the line of in range or not.. I put the gun out front and squeezed once, he folded hard and hit the ground, fluttering like a crappie on the ice…didn’t move but a foot or two from where he fell…it was right on the cut path that borders the CRP…closer to a 40 yard shot than 30…could have been a few beyond 40..,never hunted pheasants with that 28. I will again soon…👍

I hope that bird wasn't a freak accident if you plan on using the 28 shell saver more. It could mean that your shooting partners get to shoot more birds themselves! I know little about 28 gauge, but if you can get a full ounce of shot into one of those shells, they should be lethal for a decent shooter. Nice.

My hunting partners won’t be shooting my birds anytime soon, as they’re carefully selected…fully legal to be out in the wilds with a firearm, but impaired to such a degree that they shoot very few birds…eyesight issues, hearing impairments, difficulty walking on uneven terrain, etc…some of the time I have benches set up and they’re really pass shooting…or throwing passes, as I bring a nerf football out (orange) for them to keep themselves occupied…I keep track of their position based on where I see the football…it’s a good time, and if my shooting a 28 requires more time afield, everyone’s happy, as my hunting partners enjoy being out in the wilds of North and South Dakota! 😜

Walked with Lena for a bit solo, keeping her from overdoing it…10.5 and she has a bum shoulder…Rimadyl and a Librela injection help for sure, but she’s not able to endure or recover from a normal day out here. I set my buddy’s up in a meandering creekbottom, saw 100+ flush and set back down in the corner they were just entering….Lena and I walked the edge of a small low spot across the road, maybe 2 acres, mix of grass and cattails. After she pointed a hen that flushed at 10 yards, a rooster flushed at 12-15 yards…I was above him and the 28 put him down. I took Lena to the crash site, and the bird gave modest chase, and she grabbed him about 15 yards away. Nice memory! Same with yesterday…❤️👍🍻 5/8” spur…

That is awesome! I am becoming a huge fan of the 28! I am working on getting some mallards with it, but the weather has not been cooperating.

Goose, just an observation, about 75-80% of your comments, reactions, etc, are typically negative…from my perspective anyway…as always, I could be wrong…but I know you to be a tongue-in-cheek guy as well, the joke’s probably on me…I’m kinda slow, obviously…😂

That's true I am sort of negative sometimes. Sometimes I don't like the direction that bird hunting is going in.

Thank you! Your stock went up in my mind, did you see my comment about Gordon Lightfoot? That’s my newest Goose-Ideation-of-famous-cool-person….”Carefree Highway” is a good tune…👍
