I just picked up an old '88 Sportster 1200 as a first bike. With the help of a couple dudes, I got it running good. It rides and sounds good, but it's nothing to look at. I've spent a few hours with fine steel wool and WD40 to take off a lot of the rust but there's still some left on it. Any other tips on how to remove rust would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has ever rattle canned their bike, does it matter what kind of spray paint to use or just anything that's around? I got some touching up to do on the frame and wouldn't mind blacking out some of my covers.

Damn guys, nothing? I've continued giving it wd40 baths and scrubbing with steel wool and I just picked up some high temp spray paint that can withstand 2000* temps so I think I'm good to go. Next step is to remove a couple of things, sand down one of my covers, tape shit off and paint away. I have the before pictures but I'll wait until I can show the after pictures with it.

I've got an 09 Road King and hope spray paint never touches it, but I appreciate your spirit and tenacity. Good luck with the project and let us know how it turns out.

Have you thought about powder coating the parts? May be a budget topper but might hold better than paint. I've seen some home painted rigs that look pretty cool; again, good luck...and post pics.

I thought about it, but it really wouldn't be worth it. With what I've got into it now, I'll be lucky to break even on it when I decide to sell. If I was gonna drop the money on powder coating anything, it'd be the underbody of my 84 Chevy truck.
