Tennessee guy looking for pheasant

Looking to head out to Kansas for a late season hunt. Any advice on where to hunt would be greatly appreciated.
County? City? Lodging?

It's been a strange year since we've had so much moisture delaying harvest and making some areas inaccessible due to muddy roads. I'm not really sure that we have a certain part of the State that is hot, but birds can be found if you get boots on the ground.

some areas are almost completely void of pheasants........after that it is still a crap shoot.....Kansas getting more rain, roads that may have just begun to dry out will be a mess again, where the rain hits.

Truth, I'm going to hunt tomorrow and only hunt a quarter of the ground I would have before this rain. No sense in tareing up roads when locals have to drive them the other 5 days of the week.

Go to Hays KS drive either northwest or southwest about an hour. Find a small hotel in a local town and go have breakfast with the locals. Some may own land that might let you hunt if your nice other may tell you where they are seeing birds. Just get half and hour to an hour away from the Highway or a bigger city. You want a Cafe and one stop sign...

Good advice, but as mentioned above, if the roads aren't frozen they will probably be a mess!

Wouldn’t even bother coming this year. Roads are a mess. Go to the states website kdwpt and check the forecast. That will give you a starting point.

I see this is your first post ever made so with that said it’s sometimes best to hang out here and make some posts before dropping internet scouting post.

Roads are the worst I have seen in many years , yes you will be able to get around on the maintained roads , but they won’t be that good , the minimum maintenance roads I have seen in pheasant country have had water running down them , drifted closed , tubes washed out . If you come be safe and plan on putting in a lot of miles . What Ks outdoorsman said would be a good starting spot .

long drive to face the elements.......so many places will be impossible to get to.......better wait for next season.......see all good advice above.

I’d probably listen to these guys on this one. It has been very wet down here in Oklahoma and even wetter up north. Kansas back roads aren’t anything to mess with when wet. Don’t care what you’re driving. Birds will be tough this late.

This is the first year in the last 10 that I have not hunted Kansas. Mostly due to the information provided above and the steady decline of pheasant numbers in the area I typically hunt. If you do go , id suggest viewing it as a scouting trip and focusing on quail. You will get more action. The Hays area is good advice. Lots of public walk in options. Lots of pressure too.

I have access to thousand of acres of good private ground, and last week I hunted a couple WIHA spots and did quite well. I actually limited out on one. We shot a lot of pheasants doing as well as I have since 2011. It was really good after the snow. My point is, it is possible to have a good pheasant hunt even probable if you get in the right spot. The WIHA areas I drove by didn't even have any pickup tracks in the gates. The roads being muddy so much of the year has spared them the pressure they usually get I think. I normally don't hunt WIHA but saw birds flying out in some. When we hunted it and did as well as we did, we hunted several patches of it, killing birds in all of them.

The gentleman was asking in general terms. Every given group has it's buttheads. If you don't have anything of substance to provide, why just not respond. Everything has to be confrontational for some people. In regards to the original inquiry, the advice on road conditions should be taken seriously. The Hays area received 6-7 inches of wet snow this last weedend after it had rained. Road conditions are poor in Ellis county as well as those in surrounding counties.

I. Would suggest hunting SW Kansas. Lots of Sandy roads that dry out pretty quick. In all the years I’ve hunted out there I don’t recall ever getting stuck in mud. If you would llook At Meade Gray Haskell and Seward counties you should have the opportunity to shoot a mixed bag of quail and pheasan. That area hasn’t had much hunting pressure if you have a good dog you should do well

He wasn't asking for general info if you will read the post he was asking for county and city info. Hunters have spent thousands of hours and days finding spots and to give up there areas on a public web site is ludacris.

Sounds like you have done well! I sure feel a void not coming out there this year. My #1 hunting buddy has had some issues that has kept him from going as well. I will be back! I certainly wasn't suggesting WIHA wasn't worth trying , but that the ones in the area we hunt have declined habitat wise. Have had some good luck on qual the last few years.

Sorry if I offended anyone on this forum. I was just asking for the general info on how the hunting was in Kansas. First time for my wife and it has been several years since I've been. Amazing new dog from a Kansas kennel (Outback Gun Dogs). The wife is officially hooked on bird hunting We ended up in the Bird City area. Had a great time. Birds were very "educated".
